Septic tanks overflow or break down. That can be quite expensive.

I live in Emmett Idaho, and because the city screwed up and put in a $17M waste water treatment plant that is still not operational after 4 years, my average water bill is around $190 in the summer and $135 in the winter. It does include sewer at $60. The bill is sent on the first, due on the 10th and they shut it off on the 20th. Sounds like the mafia is running the place. Seriously! I'm not sure if it is actually legal what they are doing, but I am going to do some checking into it.

I have a small house (1200 sq ft) on a 6000 sq ft lot - grass front and back. My water bill last month was $45 (includes sewer). We have all the water up in Northern California. My electric bill was just $78 in July and I run the AC as much as I want. There's just two people in the household and I do have new dual pane windows (30 year old home).

I am a single mom, I thought mine was ridiculous. I pay about an average of 13.00 to 20.00/per month with trash, sewage, everything. It is just the two of us though. Now, I measure my water for usage. In North Carolina each meter is equal to 768 gallons of water. My electricity bill is about 29.00 to 35.00. I do not know the website for the water bill average site per state, but once I find out, I will let you all know. However for those who want to know the website for the average electricity bill by state go to U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). It is a state listing with the total population, average of killowatts/hr, cost/kwh and total cost.

Even in water-stressed California, these are very reasonable rates, not a 'rip off' at all. $1.50-$3.00 per ccf (hundred cubic feet, which equals around 748 gallons) means five gallons per penny. Each of us uses 100 gallons or so a day; how can 20-30 cents per person per day for clean water be a rip off? What is my cable bill or cell phone bill per month compared with my bill for irreplaceable water?

Yeah, water rate is about the last expense a CA residential consumer should be whining about. It would be no surprise if these get a serious upward bump amidst this extended drought.
