What might be some sensible and effective ways to reach those students and then engage them? I'm at no longer their age? Many thanks.

Do you work in marketing?

Anyway,
You could host some sort of promotional event on campus in a high traffic area.

If you are doing a study of sorts, you could place an ad somewhere that is visible to lots of students like in a student common area like a Student Union bldg.

Maybe you could look for a club or student association on campus that is related to what you are trying to accomplish.

You could also try social networking-many students twitter(shameless plug)

I attended Long Beach state in the 90's. It's a huge school. There were always groups on campus selling or ortherwise promoting one thing or another. Just call the administration office and find out what you need to do to get a booth in the quad there or elsewhere.
