Just the way you put that makes me go hummmmmm.
Well, it is not the top of the world when it comes to a place to live year around, very high unemployment, the pot capital of the country, and it is depressed. I know this all sounds negative and it is, but there are some very pretty and peaceful areas in Humboldt county and the summer weather is great. This goes for the northern coast period. I don't mean the poverty necessarily, but the beauty and climate part. The further north the cheaper it gets.

...only if your idea of "great weather" includes lots of fog, 90% relative humidity and days that top out in the mid-50's for a high temperature.

Eureka is very nice weather-wise during summer. The temps seem never go above 80 and the fog is very beautiful. The only problem is how can you go from Southern California to Eureka within 2-3 hours (by air?) in short notice. There is flight from LAX to Eureka by Alaska Air. But if you do not have advance reservation, buying a ticket for travel the next day can be very expensive. Also, sometimes, there are simply no seats. A lot of people talk about the high crime in Eureka. But on my recent trips ove there, I did not see that much graffiti or gang problems other than homeless people begging in front of restaurants or next to the road. But, I was only a tourist. Can somebody proves me wrong about the crime situation? It seems that it is quite safe compared with Los Angeles County's crime situation.

oh, I agree, to some some extent. I will add it isn't foggy all the time, in fact after about 10am it usually clears away. The OP wants cool and that area has it. We lived there and the temps were quite a bit above 50 in the summer, they were really quite nice. It was one of the few things we liked about the area, plus the area is pretty. You do a little bit south, maybe 50 miles and the land is still not expensive and the weather is even better.

Compared to parts of Los Angeles, yes and yes, you are right about the distance. That would be the downer..

Not sure where you saw 2-3 hours.
But Eureka is just a bit further than the 10 hours ... but not by much.

If you have ideas outside of CA ... maybe AZ, NV, CO ... within 10 hour drive of Riverside I am open to hear them also.
My bet would probably be on Prescott, Az. It is a fine city and outside the sphere of California tax influence. I think it is within a 10 hour drive to Riverside.
Then, in Cali, i would check out Newbury Park. It is near Thousand Oaks.

Morrro Bay maybe another good choice. Santa Maria, Ventura and of course our favorite of Escondido!

Good hunting!

If you are going as far as Eureka you could also look in the area around Mt. Shasta. Small towns like McCloud or Weed.

I think the reference was to flying. You are right about the time. I should have thought about that when I suggested Eureka. It is certainly more than 10 hours or a very long 10 hours.
