Edwards AFB, things to do
Hi all! My job may relocate me to Edwards AFB for some flight testing of an airplane that my corporation is developing. I've never been, so what is there to do around there? It appears there's a short drive to LA and then there's some parks and golf courses there, but what sorts of things would one get to do near there that's unique? I know it's on salt flats but ... I've done that before.

I am about 45 minutes from Edwards Air Force Base in Canyon Country. One of the things we like to do out that way is camp in California City. It is a very smal town about 15 miles or so from you. It is the middle of the Mojave. we load up the trailors woth sandrails, dirt bikes, atv's, and dune bugs (a rather large group, most out of LA) and ride in the desert for a few days. We do day trips too! You being very close, could do day trips rather easily. You are nearest I beleive to Rosamond, yet another small town, then going east you will run into Lancaster, then Palmdale and so on. All of these towns have there own festivals and such, but as far as night life, your best bet is to trek a hour and a half to 2 hour (without traffic) into Los Angeles or 4 hours into Vegas (vegas could be 3 from you). You will find alot of outdoors activities like hang gliding, hiking, and as previously stated Dirt bikes. Best to do those activities in the winter though, summers are a scorcher (always over 100-115). There are lakes that you can go to that are relativly close for summer for fishing and boating. For the most part you will be in the middle of the desert surrounded by semi small towns. It is beautiful in the desert at sunset though! Anyway hope this helps a little, I am sure some natives to the area can point out specific things to do in the immediate area. Best of Luck

Will this relocation be permanent or temporary?

Temporary. For 3-6 months, tops, so they'll likely spring for an apartment either on or near base.
The suggestions above were great! I enjoyed hiking in Phoenix in April, but I was looking for something unique to the area that I could do, though dune bugging sounds really fun!

Hi. I live in Lancaster. What is there to do???.. haha! Nothing! Really, there just isn't much out here. Of course there is hiking, bike riding (lots of clubs), etc. There are parks (if you have children that'd be good), a crappy mall in Palmdale... just not a whole lot.
However.. LA is only about an hour from Lancaster (probably closer to 2 hrs if you're going to live on base) and obviously there are tons of options of things to do in LA.
