camping along the coast
My partner and I will be driving up the coast in a few days from San Diego to San Francisco. I was wondering if anyone on here had suggestions for places to camp along the way, we'd like to take a few days to enjoy the scenery. We are experienced (tent) campers who don't need access to running water or bathrooms, just a nice view.

I like San Elijo in North County San Diego, Carpinteria, Refugio, (Montana de Oro- limited services though) Morro Bay State Park, Andrew Molera (Big Sur). Also, consider the hostels up at Pigeon Point lighthouse and Montara lighthouse as you get closer to SF.

Ah, Big Sur is a must!!!
Truly.
There are a number of camping options.
JPB State Park is the one i'm most familiar with.
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
Big Sur Camping guide, Big Sur California
After that, if you want to enjoy the Red Woods in Santa Cruz county, camping is available in Nisene Marks State Park.
But Big Sur is #1
Nisene Marks State Park - Aptos in Santa Cruz County
It's about 1 & 1/2 hours north of Big Sur

Montana De Oro is spectacular, do not miss it.
Kirk Creek Campground near the south end of Big Sur could be the most spectacular campground in America.

In Ventura you can camp right off the HWY as close to the ocean as you can get at Faria Beach. I always drove by it thinking it seemed kind of ghetto to be that close to the HWY, but after I did it in a RV I realized you totally tune out the road because you are inches from the beach. There is the road, then boulders then sand, then ocean....nothing else between you and that ocean view! Except for the cars driving behind you, but it is like a small road with HWY 101 behind that. It is way better than I thought it would be because it isn't like most campgrounds where you are in a big campground lot, this is more like everyone parking parallel to the road and ocean.
