New split California movement.
A group called Downsize California Now,headed by former assemblyman Bill Maze, will be seeking petition signatures to qualify for a 2010 ballot initiative.Unlike earlier attempts, which sought a North/South split, this one has a different twist. The proposal is for the 13 coastal counties from Marin to Los Angeles to form a new state called West California, while the rest of the state remains "The real California".From a political standpoint this idea has real merit;liberal coastal California separate from the more conservative rest of the state.Like other earlier attempts to divide the state, this one has little chance of success, but it is certainly an interesting idea.

Sounds like some Republicans want to add two more senators to their column.

This has to be one of the dumbest proposals for splitting the state I have ever seen. And it amazes me how shortsighted this guy is.

Getting rid of the liberal coastal counties would "turn California again into the Golden State it once was,'' he say
|
Does this fool not realize that the coastal counties are the wealthiest, most prosperous parts of the state that help subsidize a lot of his "real CA"? The "real CA" would most likely join the ranks of poor southern states.

Thousands of people from all over the state are already supporting the movement, the former assemblyman claims, and the group is in the process of identifying regional leaders to drum up more interest. He is confident he can collect the 694,354 signatures required for putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot.
|
Well that is what happens when people only surround themselves with other people that think like they do; they get some false sense that the majority of people actually support them.
I really wish the press didn't give these kooks the time of day. This guy is living in some alternative universe if he actually thinks a significant amount of people support this.

Imagine the fun of, say, working in OC and living in LA (or vice versa) and having to file income tax returns in two states. Brilliant idea.

California... The land of freaks and nuts. Congratulations, you are now 70 billion dollars in the hole and the place is looking more and more like a third world toilet than it ever has before.
Maybe with some luck and another 70 billion dollars the whole dam state will look like a third world toilet.
Keep up the good work

So they want to reduce government by creating an additional government... add another governor, another legislature, another level of bureaucracy. Idiots.

"Congratulations, you are now 70 billion dollars in the hole"
Hey! You bring up a great point. If the coastal counties are to become a new state, "West California," and the rest of the counties remain California, that means they will be stuck with the debt (and other bad historical stuff like pensions and Prop 13) and the coast gets to start clean, right? Maybe this isn't such a bad idea after all.

Then the real California can tell West California "no water for you" until they pay up.
