Are you very, very familiar with the Truckee area?
Hi all,
I was actually born in Truckee but i haven't lived there for years and i'm not familiar with the area anymore and i may need to leave Santa Cruz for the winter (housing issues ... again ) and thought i might try to find a place up there for at least the winter ... maybe permanently ... i don't know.
If anyone out there is very familiar with and knowledgeable about Truckee / Tahoe and if you want help me out so i can learn about the area and hone in on the best places to search, will you send me a private message so i can communicate with you?
And if there are any honest and kind realtors who are in the area and/or have connections up there, that would be super swell.
Thank you.

Here's what little I know. I presume you are in search of a rental. There are very few apartments. The market is mostly houses and trailers. There is an area of modest homes and a newer condo complex - Deerfield Drive - but it's pretty limited. Downtown will be another option. Tahoe Donner - you're talking big bucks. Same deal with Donner Lake. Most people with modest incomes live more out toward Reno - scattered communities along I-80 that are not within Truckee City limits. Another modest income option is to the north along Hwy 89 (some commute from as far as Sierraville). The trailers are in a few clusters around town. Mostly they are occupied by Hispanic low wage workers.

Again, Donner Lake, I am assuming you are young and want to be around young people having a good time. You share a house with others at the west end, you work at Sugar Bowl, or Boreal, or Squaw Valley, or Alpine Meadows.
If you are a coot, and don't have much money, I don't suggest Truckee.
If you are a skier, mountain biker, climber, hiker etc, it is the E ticket.

well, at least this post is coherent and informative (although, what's a "coot").
ummmm, well, you assume wrong although "young" is a relative thing.
but no, i'm not a 20 something partying snow-border and i most likely cannot afford to live in the Donner Lake area as much as i would like to.
but thanks.

Donner lake is attractive to the young crowd, because it is affordable. There are many homes which are rented to packs of young'ns.
Tahoe Donner is popular with flatlanders, but not so much with locals. Why deal with the volume of snow, steep roads and heavy shade when you can live in Glenshire or Sierra Meadows, pay less, have less snow and more sun.
The general run of locals live in those two subdivisions.
First rule of Truckee living, do not live where the white fir grows,... deep snow and dark shade.
In Truckee a coot may be anyone over 25.

Well, i guess if you have a pack of anti-coots it's affordable.
Over 25 eh?
That's funny ... kinda sad but funny.
So at 26 you'll be a coot?
bummer.
I have old baby pictures at Donner Lake.
I wish it was then ... before the madding crowds took over ... and ruined it ... like they do everywhere they go.
Anyway, thanks for the info.

Truckee is a great town, a really great town, if you like the out of doors, if you like skiing. Winters are long, if you have something to do, it is hard to find a better place to live. I lived there 30 years, and hated to leave.

I was born and raised in Truckee. If your looking for cheap housing look on craigslist theres probably some nice places in Sierra Meadows, Prosser, or Glenshire. I reccomend all three areas, but if your looking for somewhere close to town I would more likely reccomend Prosser or Sierra Meadows. There is also a few apartment complexes that work with people who dont make a big income like Henness Flats, and Frishmans Hollow. Any other questions let me know, I know Truckee like the back of my hand.
