1. Name your state of choice, if you could go anywhere...
2. Name a practical choice for a state you'd consider.
3. Different country, perhaps?

My answers:
1. Hawaii - beautiful, warm, but you need serious cash to live well there.
2. Oregon- amazing coastline and natural beauty, but a bit cold and gray in winter.
3. Portugal

Not really, there are plenty of people without much money that are happy there, like all the real Hawaiians.

2. Oregon- amazing coastline and natural beauty, but a bit cold and gray in winter.

Only west of the Cascades, east of the Cascades is warm and sunny, and in the winter cold and sunny, I think the coastline is overrated. The California coast from San Simeon north is far more spectactular, in my opinion
3. Portugal

If the world is included, there are too many fine places that would work. In this country there are many fine places, west of the 100th meridian..

I'm with you. SW MO is where we are and where we want to be at this stage in our lives as well. Of course, we just got here.

VA is beautiful. I've lived there twice and looked at it for retirement but the costs were prohibitive.

I've already lived in three other countries but I've always come back to the U.S. so it must be where I belong and want to be.

There's no place like home!

We too thought about VA as well as Tenn. The only part of VA that we felt was financually feasible was in the south part (which was ok) but we wanted to be near a decent airport as well.

Tn had almost everything we wanted but we still choose NWA. It is a little nearly family.

It would be back to Ireland for me...or Brittany. Hawaii would be nice too.

I'd move back to Germany if I could...in fact, I may be moving back there in a few years

As for the US...I've traveled all over and Maine is nice, as is Virginia and much of the colonial east coast, but I don't do snow or cold... so no thanks

1. Go anywhere implies, money is no object. In which case, simply stay put and live like a grandee right cheer in California.
2. Reality - assuming living to 100, and, given long term care and assisted living expenses and at some point, diminished income - Virginia (not NoVA, but less expensive areas).
3. If money were no object, France. Realistically, Latin America, the Caribbean, or SE Asia (even Virginia may be too expensive, plus, if we end up with a Canadian or UK type health care system, we don't want to be here when we get old and instead will want to live in a medical tourism hot spot).

I LOVE this thread:

1. Hawaii
2. California (I'm not very practical obviously)
3. Beach. anywhere 80 degrees all the time and not too conservative!! i think there are LOTS of different countries that would suffice!

1 and 2 were EASY answers!

I don't honestly know. I've visited many places but really couldn't see myself living in any of them. I'm sure I COULD, everyone can adapt, but it's not something I would do voluntarily. If I HAD to leave it would be to OR or WA, I need the West Coast vibe.
