Default Gold Country

For those who know the area (and it's a big area), what are your favorite attractions; the 'must-sees'?

That's a very good suggestion! I think I may take the train ride next weekend. Thanks!

They have some great beer and pretzel runs, wine and cheese runs. Used to go on the New Years night on the train. My wife walked thru the train yard everyday on the way to her elementary school. We always hear the train whistles when we call up to her dad's house, he lives a half mile from the rail yard.

Check out Calaveras Big Trees up on Highway 4, great grove of redwoods, different species than coastal redwoods.

The Kennedy Mine in Jackson, at least one of the caverns in Calaveras County (Mercer, California, Moaning) The Old timers Museum in Murphys. Agree with Ferretkona about the Big Trees.

Thanks, all! Great ideas! Keep 'em coming. This will require more than one weekend trip, but I'm willing to do it.

I second the Empire Mines recommendation..

The South Yuba river is also a great place to spend a day.

Try a drive over Hwy 4 before the pass is closed for the winter. Fall colors and some fantastic high mountain passes that are only found in a few places in the US.
