"Inventing LA: The Chandlers & Their Times" + "Searching for Whitopia"
"Inventing LA: The Chandlers & Their Times" is a fascinating PBS documentary which is in heavy rotation this week (or watch online). It illuminates a history of L.A. using the Otis/Chandler dynasty as both the light source and the prism through which that light is refracted. Despite its two hour length, it is necessarily schematic given the volume of history. At the very least, it's worth the time to enjoy the archival photos and films of a developing L.A.
I haven't read "Searching for Whitopia" by Rich Benjamin, but from the gist derived from author interviews, I think it may be of interest to many on this forum, especially those that are leaving or have left. The author chronicles a (predominantly) white flight to the type of idealized small communities which I seem to read about here on a daily basis.
