" The Smith River, in Del Norte county, is the northernmost of California's major rivers. The mouth being about 5 miles from the Oregon border, 10 miles north of Crescent City. It is the largest free-flowing river in the state, producing the largest Steelhead and Chinook Salmon. The state record steelhead, 27 lbs. 4 oz. and the state's second largest Chinook Salmon, 86 lb, were both pulled out of the Smith. Steelhead of 20 lbs are caught on a regular basis and the chinook average 20-36 lbs."

I've always been fond of June Lake and the surrounding area in Mono County/Inyo National Forest

No more than a few thousand ponds, rivers, lakes, streams, bays, areas.
This summer I was pulling golden trout out of a particular stream so frequently I got bored and took a nap.

Drive up to Bishop or Mammoth. Tee up a golf ball. Pull out your driver and hit it in any direction you wish. Wherever your ball lands you will find trout!

This is kind of like one of those very general "what is the best place to live" questions. Can we narrow it down somewhat?California is a huge state, and most surely has some good fishing. Is your interest mainly salt or fresh water fishing? After that, what part of the state? What species?Would you rather fish from a boat on the ocean or lake,or would you prefer to hike into the moutains to fish remote lakes and streams?Lots of good fishing all over the state for many types of fishing for dozens of different species.

Quoted for truth. The Eastern Sierra is great for fishing in the summer.
