I very much agree with this. San Diego was definitely set up better to be the important city of Southern California with the excellent natural harbor they have, whereas LA had to literally create its own harbor. The rapid rise of LA is quite fascinating since the LA basin was initially regarded as being a very undesirable place to develop a major city.

sorry to interupt, but you can guys can say all you want and there still remains only one clear reason why LA is a more global city than SF, the porn industry.

proceed.....

I was thinking that too (also as a joke, as I presume you were), but it should be pointed out to those of the heterosexual persuasion who don't know any better: San Francisco has surpassed Los Angeles as the capital of the gay adult entertainment industry.

Hub of all that's hot / San Francisco -- surprise! -- has surpassed Los Angeles as the capital of the gay adult entertainment industry

So, perhaps, the answer to which city is more global depends on who you're asking. I say let the heteros keep L.A. It's mostly a dump anyway.

San Francisco Bay area has proven to be the strongest economy in California with more companies that are globally powerful. Chevron Texaco, Google, Lucas Film, Oracle, Wells Fargo, Charles Swab, Apple,Sun micro.. etc etc etc. The tech center of the world has helped the US economy recover as well. L.A. is destined to be always second to the SF Bay Area which is growing and growing not only as the political, educational, banking and technological center that it already is, but also economically. In addition, unemployment is lower, and salaries are higher in San Francisco Bay than in L.A. LA is number 13.
Here is a list from list for Global cities:
The Global Cities That Offer the Most Opportunity - Richard Florida - The Atlantic Cities

The table below, adapted from the report, shows how the 27 global cities stack up on their overall ranking of opportunity. The rankings are based on ten dimensions of opportunity (see below) for which the report collected data on 60 individual variables.
Overall Opportunity Rankings for All 27 Cities Rank City Total Score 1 New York 1,112 2 London 1,111 3 Toronto 1,096 4 Paris 1,073 5 Stockholm 1,062 6 San Francisco 1,061 7 Singapore 1,045 8 Hong Kong 1,015 9 Chicago 997 10 Tokyo 974 11 Sydney 964 12 Berlin 955 13 Los Angeles 954 14 Seoul 915 15 Madrid 903 16 Milan 827 17 Beijing 769 18 Kuala Lumpur 761 19 Shanghai 729 20 Moscow 712 21 Mexico City 673 22 Abu Dhabi 650 23 Buenos Aires 597 24 Istanbul 578 25 Johannesburg 534 26 São Paulo 527 27 Mumbai 515 Table adapted from "Cities of Opportunity" (ranking numbers adjusted for clarity)
New York is first, even though it failed to top a single category. London is second, up from sixth in the 2011 version of the report (this is the fifth iteration). These two cities also came in first and second on a comprehensive listing of the world's most economically powerful cities I compiled last year. Toronto is third. Paris is fourth, also up four spots since 2011, and Stockholm is fifth. San Francisco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Chicago, and Tokyo round out the top 10. Los Angeles is 13th.

That's true in a commercial sense but it's hard to say they have more cultural impact than Hollywood.

In the later half of the 19th century there was actually a debate over which city would become the big dog of Southern California; L.A. or San Diego. Basically, L.A. got hooked up to the continental railway system a good 20 years before San Diego did and it used that lead to build up a commanding position in trade and commerce thus outgrowing San Diego from the 1870's on. Also L.A. had more room to sprawl and grow compared to San Diego thus why it took the lead and has maintained it ever since. L.A. is kind of like the west coast NYC while San Diego kind of aspires to be like Boston. A Boston with nicer weather and better beaches.
