They had GumBall Alley, & the motel/hotel rooms designed like caves.
Bubble Gum Alley, and the Madonna Inn, with a number of different design features, and a mens room that is a regular stop for tourists of both sexes.

That's Right Bro...

The TV station there is the sister station to where my wife worked.
KSBW-TV8 Salinas.

Dina Ruiz worked there with my wife.

I'd live in the Gold Country (Amador or Calaveras County). Sutter Creek is a great little town, and I like Angels Camp very much as well.

My concern for the foothill communities/gold country is what we saw happen in Murphys in the name of "progress." The first time we were there, which was in 1996, it was a cute, historic town with a local art colony feel about it and some nice little coffee shops and restaurants. A couple of years later it looked like what I think happened to Carmel over the years -- 1966 forward. It had devolved into large-scale art "happening" with a commercialism that, in our opinion, destroyed a great deal of its charm.

We had actually thought about retiring in Murphys until it became "discovered," much like what's happened in parts of Oregon, Ashville, NC, Taos, NM and other formerly desireable locations.

^^You are going to be outta luck then, because there arent many undiscovered places. With the internet, forums like this, and an increasingly mobile population.......those days may be over. Youve got to pick your spot you are most happy and do it.

Did that! But it's a real shame we had to leave our native state to do so.

I told my wife the exact same thing while we were living in CO. Monterey was the only place I wanted to live in CA if we were to move back. Then two days later I got a job offer in Monterey from a recruiter cold call out of the blue! I about fell out of my chair.

I currently live in the Monterey area. It's beautiful here, this is true, but the summers are downright gloomy with all the fog and overcast and quite chilly a lot of the time. Fall is the best time of year here, weather wise. It has a lot of tourist going through all year long, being everyone wants to visit beach areas and Monterey has a lot to offer in the way of entertainment. It's VERY expensive to live here. I'm looking for a warmer area to retire to and I'm even willing to put up with cooler winters to have sun in the summer. Also, I can afford a lot more somewhere else. If you have a good cash flow and enjoy fog, sea breeze and cooler weather, this is the spot.
