We are moving in a few months to Southern California for family reasons. Will be working from home with 3 little kids about to start school. I have been looking into Irvine, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes. Basically we will be renting a 4 bedroom house and prefer to be near shopping and restaurants. Any suggestions out there?

Thanks so much and see you soon on the left coast!

Jason

1st .. be prepared for at least one nasty remark regarding calling CA "Cali" ... maybe just the fact i said that will be a preventative.
2nd .. you may wanna post this up on the L.A. forum ... might get more and/or better responses.

I came here to ask this. The three cities listed aren't exactly right next door. PV has the additional factor of being far from the freeways. there's shopping and restaurants everywhere. SoCal isn't a bunch of little towns. It's a continuous carpet of houses, offices, roads, restaurants, and shopping centers for 50+ miles in every direction.

I think Manhattan Beach is real nice, and according to this list, it has better schools than Irvine and Palos Verdes:
Top 50 Cities in California ranked by Quality of Public Schools

You are closer to the beach, Manhattan beach has a nice mall nearby, big city life close as well.

Irvine is very suburban, stamped houses, restaurants and shopping is quite limited imo.

Just depends on what you like really.

Depends on what you want. You picked 3 distinct places.

Palos Verdes is secluded, the area can be semi-rural(not unusual to see some horses), is nestled into hills(or rather, one big hill), very quiet, and fairly prestigious. Housing stock can vary wildly, since there are many custom properties.

Irvine is mostly newer housing for the region(post 1980) and very suburban. Lots of shopping and restaurants in the area, as well as other activities. Very clean and well kept.

Manhattan Beach is an older area and slightly more urbanized. Has that typical LA drabness to it that comes from being an older city. If you want a more urban atmosphere, Manhattan Beach and areas north can provide it.

If you're looking for a specific type of neighborhood or for specific amenities, please provide them and some of us here can narrow it down.

x2.

I'll admit that I missed that as well.

Even working from home requires travel now and then, so that can factor in.

Thanks for all the great infromation everyone. I fly out to the area for 2 weeks this month to research neighborhoods to live. From reading these replies I'll move Manhattan Beach up to the "must visit" status and maybe Palos Verdes isnt for us. Basically my work will be 100% from home. School district and amenities (shopping restaurants) are the most important issues for us now. We can live anywhere and am planning on renting for ~ 4,000/month.
