Very good point. I found a job opening there in Corvallis Oregon so I've gotten a little off the search in CA and Washington while applying for that job, but will still do some research this weekend!
Well, Corvallis is supposed to be a nice city... consistently ranked high on quality of life. Also, there's OSU there, and I believe it has good engineering programs.

Thanks very much. I have some things to think about now, And yea, I've noticed housing prices, ugh! I don't like the materialism emphasis !!! I'm kindof leaning away from CA. Just seems way too expensive . But I'm still looking into things, and I'll be off work all weekend, so I'll have time to do more research.
I find it kind of odd you'd be so concerned about the cost of housing in either of these places we've mentioned. If you're working full time as an RN, you'd only be paying around 25% of your income for a two-bedroom apartment.

So we disagree about the materialsm thing. Okay.

As far as drinking, Chico State is well-known as a big drinking school, even more so than Cal Poly, I believe.

I often wonder about those so called rankings. I think heavy drinking is across the board at college. One reason to lower the drinking age to 18, take the mystique out of it.

I hear those southern colleges have a drinking major, they call it; Law.

I sort of got through my drinking age in the Navy.

Unfortunately, many people here in SLO have yet to get past their drinking age, be they in their 30s or 40s. Not sure why it's such a socially acceptable thing here... not just among college kids, but full grown adults... I guess many of them are academic careerists with no children of their own and no need to act their age.

The adult drinking scene in SLO is not something I am aware of, I don't get out much after the sun goes down. A big night for me is three beers.

sms1967 is on a distinguished road
I've never agreed with Clarks on anything before on this forum... but he's right about Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. First rate engineering school and the surrounding communities are small. You might have trouble affording a house but you can rent homes within a 20 minute drive from campus. Having said that, if you can get into a home right now I can't see you doing anything other than gaining equity and market. Finding a job in CA is tough, in general, but it's worth your time to look.
