I'm looking to relocate to the Tahoe area. Admittedly, I'd prefer to live in Truckee given the lack of tourism vs. Tahoe and its close vicinity to the I-80 (sometimes I need to fly out of Reno). However, apparently a Ritz opened up very recently which is making it close to impossible to land a good rental property. They seem to be gone before they're even posted on Craigslist or Sierra Sun...all of them being grabbed by people relocating to work @ the hotel.

That said, I'd like to hear people's opinions of the North and South Lake Tahoe areas vs. Truckee. Which do you think is better? What are the pros and cons of both?

Thanks in advance.

What's in a name?
Go for Truckee. It gives immediate street cred.

This costs just a bit ($39 for 2 months and $49 for 3 months) but it's the best source of rental listings that i've found and paying a little bit of money to find a good rental is worth it imo.

Craigslist for the Truckee/Tahoe area has never seemed like a good way to find a place.

I'm on Housing Connection too.

Craigslist is inaccurate simply because a lot of these "mountain people" don't understand how to utilize keywords in a way that gets their properties exposure on the web. As long as you search individual neighborhoods (i.e. prosser, tahoe donner, glenshire, etc.) you get 95% of the listings you see on Housing Connection through Craigslist.

Southlake looks like the poor section of Concord, plus big casinos.

Northshore, Tahoe City and West shore are great places to live, Kings Beach, not so great, Incline is fine but far from good skiing.

Do you want to rent a house or a room in a house, if a house, you want to be in Glenshire, if a room you want to be at Donner Lake. Avoid Tahoe Donner.

Thanks for the insight, I truly appreciate it.

Could you provide a little more detail about why you should avoid Tahoe Donner? Glenshire is my #1 pick, it's awesome to see you confirming that our heads are in the right spot. We've had a few potential rentals fall through because we were second in line to people that applied before us.

Thanks again - to answer your question: we prefer to rent a house as we have a dog.

Tahoe Donner is up Northwoods, Northwoods is a pain during storm periods, the flat landers in two wheel drive like to start up it until they spin out, and close the road.

Tahoe Donner has deep snow, while snow is nice, the deeper the snow, the deeper the pain of dealing with it.

Tahoe Donner has white fire, a tree that likes deep snow, my advice to all is, never live in a white fire forest.

Glenshire is out in in the desert Much less snow, and far fewer flatlander tourists. If you have to go to Reno it is an easy slide down to I80

We used to come out of our ranch north of town, down I80 then up to Glenshire to drop the kids at school, then back to 80 and down the hill to Reno, we never had any problems.

Oh, 4x4 is worth its weight in gold.

Ah, that's interesting.
Whenever i've looked on Craigslist for the Truckee area, all i've ever seen are vacation rentals.
I must be as dumb as them "mountain people".

If you are looking to relocate to a primary residence I would highly recommend Prosser, Sierra Meadows, or Glenshire. These areas are mostly locals. I would avoid Tahoe Donner completely because of heavy snow loads, accidents in the winter, and tourists.
I currently live in Glenshire, the only downside to Glenshire is that it is about 10-15 minutes from town, and 20-30 minutes in the wintertime. It is closer to Reno though.
Hope this helps!
