Default Eureka/Arcata?

My wife and I are interviewing for jobs in the Eureka/Arkata area. What I have read so far in the forum has been relatively favorable. Would you agree? Is there any downside to living in this area? Many thanks!

Default Don't to do it!

My wife and I lived in Eureka 1 1/2 years ago. We lived there for 1 year and moved. We regretted making the trek to Northern California. The weather is terrible. If you like the cold, wind and fog than this is the place. There is nothing to do and is to far from any major city. I always use to here how beautiful it is in this area. People would say that it is an outdoor paradise where you can enjoy all types of outdoor activities such as hiking, and biking. However, who wants to go hiking and biking in the cold windy fog? The place is infested with Meth addicts and have tweekers all over he place. My parents came to visit and they were shocked on how many homeless people there are roaming this area. They use to vacation in this area for years, but had not gone in 3 years and they were stunned by the difference.

What is a tweaker?
A "tweaker" is a term for a crystal meth user that came out of the U.S. rural Midwest and has become increasingly common as the media and the entertainment industry picked up the term.

Tweaker is a SoCal term. speed was a problem in the western US first - it was exported to the midwest later on.

The area around Eureka & Redwood Nat'l Park is gorgeous! True, there is fog & lots of rain in the winter - not what most people think of when they refer to the CA coast. With the thick evergreen forests & rocky coastline, it is more like Oregon.

The weather is not so bad in Humboldt. In fact, it is wonderful most of the time in the Mattole Valley and along The Lost Coast.

I'd return in a heart beat if I could find a decent job there.

Question crime rate difference between Eureka and Arcata?

Why is there such a large difference in the crime date statistics of Eureka and Arcata? They seem to be only 10 minutes apart, but Arcata crime is much lower. I would have assumed Aracata would be higher since it is a university area.

Another 10 minutes north you have McKinleyville which is lower than both of them by a good amount.

What's up? Lazy criminals without cars or what?

The crime rate is higher in Eureka because that is where the county seat is, the county jail, 2 hospitals and a large infrastructure for a city of 28,000. The juvenile hall is there also. A large amount of juvenile delinquints and ex-cons are sometims sent here to get rid of them. Arcata on the other hand is a college town with a decent police force that keeps the meth addicts away. The lazy substance of choice there is pot and alchohol. Now there is also McKinleyville, Ferndale, Fortuna and Bluelake . Each one is differnent. Mck is bedroom community, Ferndale and Fortuna are farming and Blue lake is a small town inland from the coast by about 10 miles and is much warmer than Eureka, Arcata and McKinleyville and Ferndale which is the coolest in weather. Fortuna can be nice and warm. There is also Rio Dell, Scotia, Trinidad, Fieldbrook, Bayside, Samoa, Manilla, Cutten and Myrtle town. Fieldbrook is inland and shielded from the coastal fog and wind, which is not all the time and besides it cleans the air and keeps it fresh.
