LOL @ Tramp Stamp. I havent heard that one before!
I guess what they say is true, California is the pits and the dream is dead some 40 years now.
So I guess it's off to another place , North Dakota perhaps.
I've been looking around for a place a working man with a middle class mentality can live a good life with a little peice of mind. Is this possable in 21st century America? Or am I dreaming of a by gone golden age in the USA someplace between 1945 and 1965?

Good to know that almost no one who posts here has the foggiest clue what they are talking about. "Lass" especially. If that is the way you feel about the residents and place, no one is stopping you from departing. Even for your very wise two years. I was born in Kelseyville, I grew up surrounded by farmers and ranchers. I lived amongst people who cared for each other and when needed they cared for their land and animals. I have spent my whole life going to dinners and BBQ's with people who wanted to see their friends and neighbors happy and were concerned about the direction of Lake County and it's citizens. As far as the lake itself, the cause of the problems in the summers are a combination of low rainfall in the winter and an algae called hydrilla. The algae multiplies to cover the surface of the lake killing things under it that need light. The scary talk of mercury and child bearing age is true for every body of water in the world. The mercury is harbored in fish that are bottom feeders or directly eat bottom feeding fish. Doctors recommend pregnant women limit their consumption of tuna fish due to mercury levels also and last time I looked, tuna comes from the ocean. On the other hand, there are depressed areas and there are beautiful areas. I was "bred" here, like generations before me and am a college educated woman who is active in local groups. I am surrounded by people who were "bred" here who also come from long lines of people who continue to "breed" here, who are also college educated. Next time you go to the hospital ask the doctors and nurses who tend to your children if they are the "in the water" generation after generation breed the depressing lifestyle. Two pretty obviously miserable and depressed years do not give you a right to voice a generalized and bigoted opinion without at least stating that it comes with great prejudice and a limited knowledge of what it is you are speaking of. Please if you want to know how wonderful this place can be, seek out people who love it.

Living in Lake County
I have read quite a few messages left from others who have lived in Lake County for a few years. I have been here for 17 years, before that I lived in Martinez, CA. Lake County has had its problems from the past, but seriously what county hasn't. Personally, if you take into consideration what people are trying to remove themselves from, this is the place to go. In comparison to the other overly populated areas, Lake County is a bit of God's Land. Yes there are recreational drugs here, it is visible. Is there a place where there aren't rereational drugs?
The benefits of living in Lake County is the clean air, the fact that you have to actually walk several steps to borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor. You can actually see deer, and hear crickets. Most everyone watches out for every one else. Truly and honestly I have watched the city of CLEARLAKE itself, clean up. Everyday there are more ammenities coming up at the board. Lakeport is refacing its Main St., and has tight knit communities. Nice and Lucern have amazing views and are really beautiful. I could find several things for each town or city that surrounds the lake..Don't believe me seriously, plan a vacation, and see for yourself how beautiful this COUNTY really is.

julesb has it right. Deer, crickets, beautiful sunsets, clean air, mountain and lake views everywhere. No traffic! People aren't piled on top of each other either. You don't hear your neighbor sneeze or flush the toilet in the morning.

I've driven through the area on several occasions and really like the scenery and isolation. As far as drugs and poverty, that's pretty much expected from small towns. They all have that, so it's basically negligible.

after spending a weekend in Loch Lomond, I feel that Lake County is a good place for vacationers and retirees.
It would be a terrible place to live as a kid-boring, nothing to do.
There is no shortage of white trash here, that's for sure. If you are missing teeth and have numerous tattoos, you will fit right in.
I visited the Walmart in the city of Clearlake and was astounded at what I saw.
There was a man in his 50's walking around with a swatstika tattoo on the back side of his left forearm and and a tattoo of a person with the raised, outstretched arm making the "hail Hitler" sign on the back of his right forearm.
Pathetic.
Overall, Lake County is a great place for those who like a slow pace of living and/or retired. There are no jobs available besides a couple private businesses and crappy retail jobs-Walmart, grocery stores, etc.

I love Lake County, but you are right on target about that Wal-Mart, it's like going on the set of Night of the Living Dead! But seriously, it's a very diverse place, there is truth in everything I have read here, good and bad.
No matter what you do, don't judge the place without having a real look around, Clear Lake, Lower Lake, Clearlake Oaks, Nice, these places are a world apart from Kelseyville, Lakeport, Konocti Harbor, Buckingham, Cobb Mtn., etc. Every one of those places is distinctly different, and that is part of the beauty of Lake County!
Yes there are many registered sex offenders, parolees, and very very poor uneducated people. But there is also alot of opportunity, and alot of hardworking decent people. Cobb schools are some of the best in Calif., from what I've heard. But I also told my own mother, when driving over Cobb Mountain, if someone looks like they need help, speed up, even if you have to run over them.
