Seriously avoid the Wal-Mart. Although, I usually avoid Wal-Marts everywhere. I've found the one in Rohnert Park to be disgusting, dirty and the people less than desirable. If you actually shop at the private businesses, the small family owned shops, they are wonderful and you get customer service. That's something you don't see in this day and age!

And for the person that said there is nothing to do for the kids, what about fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, water skiing etc? Sure, no mall to hang out in, but there are plenty of outdoor activities for kids.

To comment on the lack of jobs, most people do things like construction, or commute to jobs like mortgage brokering, law enforcement, wine industry, etc. So, maybe there aren't a ton of jobs available in the immediate area but people here work and many are professionals, they just like the vacation lifestyle and that is why they chose to live in a place with clean air and beautiful lakes.

I spent one summer in Lake County.

During that time I worked in a casino (for the first time), walked into a real estate brokerage, mentioned I would work for internet and phone access, and was given a desk with a lake view in exchange for doing some admin type stuff while studying for Real Estate License Exam (for the first time), sponsored by the broker, worked as a bartender (for the first time) in a 100+ year old bar, and waited tables (for the first time) at Konocti Harbor, a Union employer.

In those short months I went from one week at the Chalet, in North Lakeport, a clean motel with kitchenette on the lake (worked cleaning rooms while I was there, still friends with the management), to a studio cottage in Loch Lomand for 350/month.

Yes, some of the neighbors were toothless and tattooed, many others were cops. I left that cottage shortly after the toothless saw me leaving my studio with an African American person and flipped out. I was moving back where I came from anyway, for unrelated reasons. Still friends with the landlord, who lived on the property, and put a camera up for me after the incident.

Lake County is very diverse. Full of opportunity. I went there with nothing, and this was my experience.
