It seems like you'd pretty much have to be a workaholic in order to survive in most parts of the state, considering the rent for a studio apartment can be $30,000 a year in some cities.

California is fine for the rich and the poor, everyone else, it is a struggle.

Then don't live in the cities, and/or have roommates.

It doesn't have to be that complicated.

Don't worry, someone will be here soon to justify the price by saying "multiple roommates and great weather".

^ Edit: See there it is.

Who knew that to afford the great weather the state has to tax people to death.

I work a normal 40 hour week living on a modest wage. I, along with my GF, can afford a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Orange County 6 blocks from the ocean. I have a sizable patio and the floor space in the apartment is just over 800 sq ft. We pay less than $1,400/month and we are only responsible for paying electricity.

Now, keep in mind, we don't have kids and we both work.

I can see how someone trying to support a family and/or planning on owning a home would have a really tough time out here unless they were making 6 figures.

But until that time comes, for me, this situation is very conducive for a high QOL.

Market forces are the only contributing factors to the high cost of living in much of California. The price is justified by what the market will pay.

Please don't tell me that you think LA/OC/SD/SF/etc should be affordable for everybody: because if they weren't desirable places to live, they would be affordable for everybody.
