I too am from So Cal and I moved up here about 6 months ago and I love it. I will never go back to the LA area or any major city for that matter. I must admit though there are some down sides to Trinity County, but I am finding that this is the case everywhere. Just to be upfront, there is a lot of poverty here. When the timber industry left, so did a lot of money, jobs and people. This has led to some of the more unpleasant qualitites like meth abuse, but this seems to be prevelant in all of N California (and most of the US I guess). But there are some really great people here, you just have to get involved in activities where you would find like minded people. I live off the grid in lewiston, so it is super quiet and secluded for us and there are many opportunities to buy land (with county services like water and power - power here is now the cheapest in all of california since we just got the rights to our dam power). The roads can be difficult at times, but as a true so cal native who had never driven in snow, I just survived the worst winter here in 20-30 years and I loved it. I drove an unpaved windey road that has no sideguards and it wasn't that bad, but you do have to have an adverturous spirit. Trinity is classified as a frontier, so keep that in mind. 299 is windey and can be nasty in snow, but if you don't commute daily, its really not a big deal. I wouldn't commute to Redding if it isn't necessary, but I don't like Redding too much so I may be biased

Long and the short of it - if you want somewhere different than LA, this is your place. If you can't handle some mountain folks, maybe not. But the trees, lakes and creeks make even the harshest mountain man seem worth it.
