Yes, black widows do live in the San Bernardino mountains. But I was always told that this was because they come up hitching on wood as it comes up the hill. Not sure how they manage in the winter. We always had them in Palm Springs. They aren't as abundant here as they were there but they do manage to find their own place here. I would be more worried about the Brown recluse spider.

Didn't know we ever got black widows by our house until today! here in North Sacramento. Been in this house for three years too. Freaked out now! I only found out cause Clark Pest Control came and I happened to walk under it
( it's under the roof part that comes out from our garage). right above the side door of our garage! I worry there could be more, but do feel better after reading some of the posts that I won't die from them. However I now will be more observant outside around the house and other places since it's summer.

The Black Widow spider is all over CA. and many other states as well. They are living and thriving well there. We lived in the San Fernando Valley on some horse property and believe me I could have gone any day at any time and been able to locate several nice big ones for you. I had my home sprayed on a regular basis aso they wern't inside but they sure were outside. They never bit anyone I know or me. I know they can but unless you stick your hand in their web/nest you probably won't have to worry. They hate us as much as we hate them!!!

Eeeeegh! Spiders, yikes! Actually, black widows thrive pretty much everywhere, preferably dark places. Garage, closet, inside cabinets under sinks, laundry rooms are a few.

Excuse me while I go sh*t my pants.
We still have tons of boxes and piled stuff in our garage from our move two years ago. I keep thinking about cleaning all the stuff out. I'm going to stop thinking about that from now on. Actually, I'm going to try to stop thinking, period. You know, to get the hideous spider images out of my mind.
Believe it or not, before we moved here I made my husband swear that he had only seen one or two his entire life (he grew up in SoCal). He still sticks to that...I think he's lying.
It's funny because I looked at the title of this thread and I said to myself, "Don't open it, don't open it, DON'T open it, DO NOT OPEN IT..." and of course I opened it.

I sure wouldn't worry about it! You can't imagine how many are around your house already...your sister probably didn't bring it back with her to be honest. Unless her boyfriend found it in their luggage. The Black Widow lives everywhere! They aren't out hunting anyone. The odds of your baby getting bit are just about zip. Unless the baby actually grabbed the spider it probably isn't going to get bit. Every house I have lived in had black widows outside and I even found a couple inside....I raised two babies and neither of my babies ever had a problem. Relax. Kill them if you see them but don't fret over this!!

Draggin' up an old thread.....sorry.
I'm in Phoenix; killed a 'lil lady in the garage Friday night. Took a trip to Michigan, came home and found one in the atrium this morning. The ones I've seen out here have "elongated" bodies; kinda different from the pics I've seen (big 'ole bellies on 'em).
Their webs give them away. Kinda like a "hodgepodge"; not structured like your basic web. I messed with the web a little, and these girls like to run away.
I won't be goin' barefoot for a while....and I'm not tellin' my wife that I killed one in the house.

Currently there's one living under my dryer in the garage, and it's just waiting for me to poke my big fat toe under the machine so she can take a big ole bite of my tasty pink flesh.
Humans... They're what's for dinner!
