Stockton,in the 8 Mile area is really nice. The more Northern parts of Stockton are nice, but in Stockton, you'll always have crime, that's how it is.That's all I ever saw in 19 years of growing up there.Anyways,I can only speak about Stockton, and the 8 Mile area is nice.Plus, there's a great shopping center there!!It's also called Spanos.Look it up,I know they've got a great school (Bush elementary.)

Lodi is generally pretty good. There is even a burgeoning wine scene there. Every place has a few bad neighborhoods, but Lodi is generally a very pleasant suburb.

I've moved around so much in my life that stretch of time in Oakdale is the closest I had to a "home town". I absolutely love it and if circumstances were right I'd move back there in a heartbeat. I visit it frequently enough to know its still a great town.
the thread was a year old

I wonder if all these are still correct since this thread was originally posted. Currently Stockton has a higher population than Modesto, 294 to... 205 thousand. Manteca is also growing very quickly, with an enormous number of new houses built - as the most convenient point in the Central Valley to the South Bay area connected by only 1 freeway. No surprise that it is virtually always busy.

I may have a job offer in Modesto and I am leaving Chicago area. I was wondering the best places to live that is safe and not a "gated community". I was looking for the small town, quiet, quaint and historical area to live. Can anyone help me find that place. We actually live outside of Chicago in a small town of Indiana. This is a big change and need get high schools. Can you recommend a safe place with good schools?
