During the day, yes. At night it was 36.

progressive community (I've lived in Mt Shasta, Sedona, Kihei (Maui), Princeville (Kauai) and San Juan Island).
There aren't any in inland San Diego County. Prop 8 is a good measuring stick. I posted this map here a while ago

prop8.png (image)

The only areas I'd describe as liberal/progressive are the ones colored blue on this map. As you see, none of them are inland.

I'm not intimately familiar with Riverside County, but AFAIK it's more of the same (heavily Republican areas interspersed with religious hispanic areas). The only incorporated city in all of IE to vote less than 60% in favor of prop 8 was Redlands (59.4%). At best you can hope for progressive pockets such as the one around UC Riverside.

P.S. Here's the complete list of incorporated cities in Southern California that voted against prop 8:

- Palm Springs
- San Diego
- North county coastal SD (Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas)
- OC affluent belt (Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo, Costa Mesa, Irvine)
- Los Angeles
- Northwestern LA county and Ventura County: Ojai, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Culver City, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Burbank, Pasadena, Sierra Madre; the entire coast from Goleta to Long Beach, except Oxnard
- and, for whatever reason, Claremont.

Among cities mentioned in this thread, Escondido voted 64% in favor; Temecula, 65%; Fallbrook and Ramona, 68%; Alpine, 69%; Wildomar, 70%.

The only city that is similar to Santa Barbara is Carlsbad. It is not too big, it has nice cafes and
restaurants. Less than an hours drive to downtown San Diego and not near any military bases.

Less than an hours drive to inland towns with hiking trails. Very mild weather.

If you're not adverse to Orange County, take a look at Laguna Beach. That ought to be artsy enough for you and pleasing enough to the eye since it's on the coast. It's also not THAT far from San Diego.

Rancho San Pasqual where the Wild Animal Pk is located often has the warmest maximum readings in SoCal during winter [but cold nights].

It's a liberal arts college town, Harvey Mudd, Claremont Mckenna, etc.

I live in the Gird Valley area of Fallbrook, overlooking the golf course. Gorgeous area. Have lived in San Fran, West Side of Los Angeles, Coronado, and many other great spots. Am perfectly content here in Gird Valley. Great weather, really nice people, lots to do.

I want to thank everyone for such great input on my question. Interestingly, Carlsbad HAS come up and I'm still interested in Fallbrook. The greater challenge is finding inexpensive rentals, even roomshares. I guess you get to pay for beauty! :-) Again, thanks to everyone for taking the time. It is greatly appreciated.
