We would like to relocate to CA. What would be the best town which is also reasonably affordable? I liked Santa Monica when we visited. And what would be the ultimate worst and areas to stay way away from? I know Fresno and Bakerfield are definitely up there. Any others?

Thanks!

Where do you live now and what are you used to?

What is your budget?

Do you have a job that is moving with you?

Who says Fresno and/or Bakersfield are places to avoid? They may be where you are able to afford to live.

Santa Monica is one of many, many towns just in southern California. Anything on the beach, such as Santa Monica, will tend to be expensive.

I wouldn't avoid any county or any metro area in the state at the moment, but more information is required.

San Diego, Temecula (wine country of SO CA) Paso Robles near the coast.

Bakersfield is a sleeping giant and you might be surprised.

Huntington Beach is great and bargains can be had in South County Mission Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel

Stay away from San Bernardino area high crime

Rancho Cucamonga is nice and close to Palm Springs as well as LA

For night life LA and the OC is the best.

If I could live anywhere however I would pick Sacramento. Close to San Fran and Napa Valley plus Reno/Tahoe is a hop skip and jump

Hmmm... best.... How about San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Chico, and Boonville.

Worst...Wasco, Compton, Barstow, and Los Banos.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would even consider Wasco, Compton, Barstow or Los Banos as an option for living.

Compton is one of the best places to live in CA. Good for families. Great schools. A+++++++

The towns in Ventura County are OK, like Camarillo and Ventura - I understand even Oxnard is OK now.

The worst, Stay away from anything south of the Grapevine, or west of Palm Springs.

The best? Alturas.

Worst? Trona. Barstow's a close second.

Don't like the desert eh? Trona is a dump, but a small dump, and close to DV. Barstow surprised me, I got there last year, and it wasn't too bad. Clean air, lots of bars, a new grocery store. Now TwentyNine Palms is pretty bad.
