I guess, for $150k, the OP's 'thinking' is now complete.

SLO by FAR, followed by Paso. Paso has really done wonders recently with their downtown. Especially around the park, it's nice.

Old Town Arroyo Grande is nice. I wouldn't mind living in that part of AG.

Paso Robles is probably the best combination of "family-friendliness" and a coherent downtown (somewhat). A little cheaper than SLO, but still not cheap by any real standards.

Isn't Paso considered the "poor" part of the 5 Cities?

Paso Robles is not part of the 5 cities at all, and is over 40 miles away from the 5 cities.

I agree with what has been said.

Atascadero is the cheapest, you might find something for 150. The town isn't that nice and there isn't much culture. However, it's still pretty close to other nice places (Paso, SLO) so it's tolerable.

Paso Robles is wine country, lots of nice restaurants.

Templeton is a smaller, nice, family-oriented town.

SLO is probably the best, good restaurants, good climate, pretty fun. But the cheapest thing I have ever seen is 200k for a very small condo down on Broad St.

Getting a job first is *essential* around here. There is just no industry and jobs are hard to come by. The market is saturated and the economy is bad. The two hospitals in SLO are Twin Cities and French. The state has a hiring freeze right now, but other good employers are ASH and CMC. Diablo Canyon is also a good employer.

Good luck!

We had supper last night at Goshi's in Paso Robles, (pronounced robels, by the natives) a great Japanese restaurant, food was great, the places was packed, no sign of a recession there.

Oh, so now Paso Robles is 40 miles from San Luis Obispo? Was there a major earthquake that nobody told me about? What 5 cities are you referring to, clarks?

By the way, everyone, the OP wants to spend $150k. I'd say the central coast is out.

You poor kid, you don't know what the term 5 cities refers to do you? The idea of the 5 cities came up in the early 60's. The idea was to combine Pismo Beach, Grover City, Arroyo Grande, Oceano and Nipomo into one town. Like Fremont, CA.

The idea never took hold, the term stuck around. If you are going to try to be snarky, know your facts, if you want to try to outsmart me, don't, you can't do it.

A cheesy strip mall was built called 5 Cities center. It was torn down and replaced with the factory outlets mall.

I thought the five cities were Shell Beach (technically part of Pismo I guess), Pismo Beach, Grover City, AG, and Oceano. Nipomo is geographically separated from those five, though I'm not a local so there's a chance I don't know what I'm talking about... But I do know that Paso is definitely NOT Five Cities, nor is SLO.
