Thinking of opening a small distribution facility in Fresno area but am concerned with tax implications. i know the state income tax i'm looking at. But asre there other taxes on payroll or employees that i should concern myself with?

Any other costs i should consider in analysis? is insurance high there? How about earthquakes or???

I'm just wanting to make sure i dont overlook anything that's going to cost more than what i budget for.

Any input appreciated!!
thanks,
Hodag

You're going to get a lot of different answers to your questions. You should see out a tax attorney or CPA who is familiar with the taxes in California. Are you sole proprietor? S-Corporation? LLC?

In my line of work, we are a small business that employs more than 12 employees. Employees are subjected to withholdings such as:
FICA
Medi
Fed
State
Local
Some may be exempt from several on the above list.

These withholdings are deposited (Tax 941 and 940) to the IRS by us at the end of pay period. As employers, we also pay taxes to Employment Development Department on our employees' behalf.

As for everything else, I haven't the foggiest idea right now. My mind is cluttered with things to do and deadlines to meet. I'm sure my memory will come back soon.

Hope it works out for you. Depending upon what you are distributing the Fresno and Visalia areas work well in many ways for reaching the rest of the state. For example, UPS can be used to ship almost anywhere in California at next-day ground rates.

I'm like TimC, my brain is fried these days, its been 10 to 12 hour work days for me since early December with deadlines and proposals to do.

TimeC covered most of the taxes to consider, some cities have city payroll taxes but not in this area.

There are a number of incentive programs which include new employee hiring tax credits, sales tax credits for equipment purchases, etc., available in parts of the Fresno area. There is plenty of warehouse space available to locate in those zones to take advantage of the programs. Look at this link for more info:
Incentive Zones & Tax Credits (http://www.fresno.gov/Government/DepartmentDirectory/EconomicDevelopment/IncentiveZones/Default.htm - broken link)

Earthquakes are not really a concern for the Fresno area. The closest fault is about 60 miles away, the area might feel a slight sway when a quake happens elsewhere but I don't know of any real recorded damage ever in Fresno from a quake.

I almost forgot local business licensing/business tax. I don't know the current amounts to use but you can probably track down the info here.
