There is actually a town there if you keep going north. Why anyone would live there is another question.

The town far predates I5. There used to be a take out with a duck pond we would stop at on the way to Yosemite. You can still see the dried up pond. The town existed because people needed to get gas and food driving from the coast to Fresno.

When I5 opened there was nothing out there, it was an empty piece of California. The oil companies ran tank trucks out there to serve as gas stations until they could get stuff built.
