I recently applied for a job in Ukiah, Ca and I am trying to gather as much information as possible about the area as I have never visited...

I am from a small town in Minnesota and appreciate the personal level that living in a low population area can give. From what I have found so far it seems like Ukiah is a rural area also. I enjoy the outdoors and living an active healthy lifestyle. However, I have read online that there may be a serious drug problem in the area. This could be a serious deterrent in my decision to move. I am not an advocate of drug use or that life style. I have seen many talented people throw their lives away because of this very situation.

I would really appreciate any honest insight on what living here (people, area, personality, etc) is like! I have many career options available to me presently and I am trying to decide which is going to be the best fit for me.

I had a bizarre experience in Ukiah recently. We were driving through and decided to make a Jack in the Box curly fries stop since we needed gas also. There were at least a couple of dozen homeless folks, each with a dog on a rope. I didn't look too closely and it was dark, but I'd never seen a homeless convention before.
The town itself is the epitome of "small-town America"...well, that's what it looks like.
I'd give the place a 5 on the "meh factor". There are better and worse places.

If you have a problem with marijuana DO NOT move to Ukiah, it is part of the culture and economy. People there aren't losers or anything, there is just a lot of weed in the region with a fair amount of people in the business. Plenty of nice, average, hard working people there, just like anywhere else pretty much.

I lived there when I was much younger and my dad still lives there, so I visit often. It's a typical small town with a lack of jobs, little growth, some poverty, some hicks, fair amount of hippies, etc.. If you like small towns it's fine, nothing that special though but nothing that bad either. Although there are some nice wineries in the area and the nature around there is really nice, especially the redwood forests. I

What about relative safety though? With the use of marijuana so prevalent I would assume that there is a pretty high level of crime in the area. Would any other towns in the area be more desirable to live in within a still manageable commute time?

Crime is fine, it's relatively safe and doesn't seem any worse than average. Any crime related to marijuana generally occurs between individuals involved in that business and not some random, innocent person who has nothing to do with it.

Those crime states are from 2003, Ukiah almost never has 3 murders in a year. Most years go w/o a single murder.

There are crime states on this site as well, more updated ones too.

Huh? That makes no sense at all.

The homeless problem is excessive. I am a middle aged female and I have been harassed several times in Ukiah. Mostly at Wal Mart, Jack in the Box and The Pear Tree Center. It is especially not safe after dark. There is a huge hispanic population and the southern end of town sees a lot of gang related violence. Drug culture is prevalent especially marijauna and meth. If you are not a supporter of the marijuana culture this is not the place for you. I would not recommend it as a place to raise a family unless you want your kids to become users. Appearances are deceptive as it only looks like a nice small town.

Ukiah is very small, a bit 'backwoods' and not close to much of anything.
