Well they could tax marijuana and probably become one of the richer states in the US.

Your friend just alerted you? The State of Jefferson movement died when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor! Did he also give you the heads up about this new Arthur Godfrey show on the radio?

Makes sense.

There would be no major centers of commerce to bail out the poor areas with economic problems.

In a way, it would be like forming a new 3rd world country.

If they could extend a narrow coastal strip down to San Franscisco and include that city and suburbs, maybe it would be possible.

Yep...have seen this one pop up every few years...and always it is a "new" idea or concept!

Didn't look at the link but I know there have been many different ideas as to how to split CA. Guess it just depends on where you live as to whether or not you think it is a good idea - as well as which state you want to be in.

But yeah - it will never happen - at least any time in the foreseeable future.

Are you kidding me? Jefferson is one of the finest places on Earth! We have arable farmland, rangeland, timberland, salmon-bearing rivers, mountain wilderness, incredible biological diversity, the tallest forests in the WORLD, the clearest lake in the world (Crater Lake), a wetland lake (Klamath) that is the Serengeti of western birds, a deepwater port (Humboldt Bay),etc. It is a world class region. Medford and Redding have room to grow and will.

Ugh...what was I thinking...yea this place is really, really bad....don't ever move here....horrible..just horrible....

One of the earliest suggestions to split the state was in the early 1850s, when California migrants from Southern states wanted to create North and South California, with South California as a state where slavery was legal, ideal for cotton plantations.

There was a petition drive to qualify a ballot initiative for the November election about splitting California. It would be mostly along political lines, with mostly conservative inland and Northern California separating from the liberal coastal counties. While this proposal is not being taken seriously, we did have a thread about it, and it drew a good response, if anyone would care to go back a few months and search the forum for it.
