Default Mediterranean Climate

As another poster noted, coastal Southern California has a Mediterranean climate (which extends up along the central coast) and this is unique in North America. In fact, it is rare in general. The largest such climate region on the planet is, appropriately enough, the Mediterranean basin. The only additional areas featuring a Mediterranean climate are central Chile, the South African cape, and south-central and southwest Australia.

We moved to NC. Yes it does get humid but lately I have been following and comparing the weather and CA humidity has been about double of that here in NC. Our reason for moving here was to be able to afford to retire but still enjoy the climate. The mountain area here is just about perfect. Only a couple of hot months and only a few cold months....the rest of the time it's very close to CA at half the price!!! We are in the Piedmont NC and so far it's been great weather! Now to be close to the ocean here in NC, well I don't much care for the hurricanes so I decided not to venture that direction. If you do decide to live in CA there are places that don't cost you an arm and leg...but jobs are scarce. Big Bear Lake is one of those places. In order to live near jobs you will pay the price. We personally felt we were no longer "living" by staying there but existing!! Working all the time just to feed, clothe and have a roof over our heads. Good luck!!

I was born and raised in Queens, New York, I relocated to SoCal and lived there for 33 years...I accepted a job offer and was relocated to Philadelphia and lived ther for almost 2 years and I hated it because of the weather. I could not get used to the fact that I could only go out about 4 1/2 months of the year....the cold and the heat and humidity was unbearable, not to mention my allergies. I recently relocated back to SoCal and I am happy to be back, even though it is expensive and congested, I am happy to be back and I really do appreciate the weather and seeing the beautiful palm trees again....there is no place like California.

I agree with you 100 percent!!!!

I lived in the best climate when I lived in Calif. I lived in Thousand Oaks and Oxnard on the beach.

I don't know of another state with that kind of climate. It certainly is not Texas (where I'm at know).

Good luck though finding it and if you find that similar climate, please come back and tell us.

There's no weather like Southern California and no other place I've ever been with the financial opportunities that exist here. Let us know when you're coming.

While I think Southern California is a nice place to visit, the smog, congestion, crime and extremely high cost of living would keep me from ever wanting to live there.

I had always heard how bad the smog in the LA basin was, but I was not even close to being prepared the first time I descended from the grapevine and could barely see the mountains that were about a mile away.

Southern California does have some very redeeming qualities, but if you keep the drawbacks in mind as well, you'll be in for much less of a shock when you get there.

Also, we were in Anaheim at Disneyland last July, and the heat/humidy were almost unbearable. Thankfully my part of the state hits triple-digits in the summertime, so it didn't bother me much at all.

It may have been an anomaly, but I thought it worth mentioning. Thankfully that kept park attendance lower than normal, so it was a blessing if you could stand to be out in it. Even the usher that was presiding inside the Disneyland History Museum (where Abe Lincoln used to be) said they had record attendance that week in the museum because you could actually sit down where it was air conditioned.

We're going back in a couple of weeks, so I'll see if it's the same this time around.

The weather has been gorgeous and clear.

That's great to hear. Thanks for the information.

We went right after I graduated college in May of 2005, and the weather was wonderful, but last year was a lot different. We saw so many wildfires on the way down that it looked like half of the high desert / inland empire was on fire.
I did get some nice photos of the firefighters battling the blaze(s) alongside the highway between Palmdale and San Bernardino, though.

The recent Griffith Park fire was scary. I live next to Lake Hollywood and it got really close. The firefighters did an amazing job.
