All the feedback is bad because Modesto is bad. I'll attach a school link for you but it's not pretty either. Hang in there and a local will get back to you... but I'd look hard at other areas if you can.

I know that Modesto has gotten a lot of well deserved bad press and feedback lately, and it has been decades since I lived there, but "old town" Modesto, where I grew up for several years still has quite beautiful neighborhoods and houses. I know nothing of the schools now, (I went to Enslen elementary and went on to post graduate work, so it didn't ruin me) but the area from around W. Orangeburg to the north, to Graceda park area to the South, College to the West and not quite McHenry to the East contain what I consider to be fine neighborhoods, older well-crafted homes and beautiful huge trees.

Good Luck

I just replied to someone moving to Oakdale. Nice town just east of Modesto. Also, check out Riverbank, Escalon and Ripon all within ten minutes of Modesto Central. That's if you really don't want to live in Modesto.

The whole area is not great but stay away from Patterson, CA. It is a ghetto with newer houses. There are gangs and lots of unemployed people. Check out threads about Patterson, CA!!!! We lived there for a year and moved out as soon as our lease was up! Do your research!

Well, I moved here from Michigan, and lived all my life on the East Coast before Michigan..and I read all the horrible things about Modesto too..it was scary...never read any positives...but honestly, I do like Modesto. it does have gangs...I do not live in an area where there's alot of gang activity-but you do hear about it. But wherever I lived, there was always some type of negatives-drugs are everywhere and so are gangs...it's unfortunate that the gang population doesn't turn around and do postivie things for Modesto..and really put it on the map.
There are nice parks here-we have the Gallo Center for the Arts which is fabulous...we are 2 hours to SF...Napa...Yosemite...Sacramento...really an ideal location where you can go almost anywhere within a 3 hour drive-do beautiful day trips and so on..and the houses are super cheap right now-great buys!ofcourse, I would make sure your job is pretty stable before buying a house-for there's not much available in the job market here..back to why i like it here--the sun is always shining, its warm and really hot during the summer, but no humidity-so to me its fine(I grew up with humidity UGH!)...THE PEOPLE are friendly...I really think it depends on one's attitude..it's what you make it!
So I will give Modesto a 8.5 out of 10...because I have to admit it's pretty dusty here-due to the farming..I clean alot more, washing floors and dusting..ugh..but I'm learning to accept it..good luck and visit different areas before you move(Riverbank is ok..I was going to settle there, but I like Modesto better..Ripon is nice, but not much there...it's a matter of preference)

The North East part of town is still nice. Stay away from south Modesto.

After you move here, check out this website. My Modesto Coupons it's a great way to save some money!

Ok, I live in Modesto so here's some first hand experience. Try and stay out of Modesto and look in places such as Ripon, Oakdale and maybe, maybe Escalon. I wouldn't go into Riverbank, it seems to be full of tweekers and to me, is ghetto- same goes for the Airport district which is South Modesto and the West area-NOT GOOD AREAS! I live in central Modesto which isn't bad and if you are set on coming into the city I would look into Sylvan Ave, Scenic Rd., and Del Rio. If you stay towards the inner part of the city you might want to tour the neighboorhoods a bit more. Towards the north side of Modesto seems to have nicer communities.
