Anywhere in the 93711 zip code....and that's N side of Hearndon Avenue on the North side of town.
Been here 2 years.....check www.statemaster.com Crime and education is awful and this is in the HIGH DRUG TRAFFICKING REGION as shown on the US Dept of Justice. This is a VERY BAD PLACE.
CLOVIS people think they are ABOVE all the FresNO stuff, but check the AIR QUALITY...it's 2nd to Pittsburg, PA. All of this you can find on the net....screw all these 'BEEN NOWHERE, JAILBIRDS' from one of the 5 prisons in this area. Hard to find anyone that reads a book, or hasn't spent time in jail.
When you hear the radio/TV ads that show a lady boasting that her Bailbondsman has a child care play area in his office...you tell me? YUK.....bad education, Violent Crime #1, Drugs, no culture, and certainly noone that knows the difference! OUTTA HERE AND THANK GOD!

The DOJ lists a lot of the US as high intensity drug trafficking regions. Other areas called that include Hawaii, Northern California, Los Angeles, the entire state of Oregon, Washington, the Rocky Mountains, several parts of Texas, the entire southern border, Chicago, New England, etc. This map shows them all, the reports for many other areas run twice the size of the report about the Central Valley.

Books? Hhmm. Using the net I can also find that Fresno ranked higher than cities like Sacramento, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Long Beach, and San Jose for library use (books checked out per capita) and support.

And boy you hang out with the wrong people. Everyone in my circle is very different then your stereotypes. But then you probably do not go to the symphony, art museum, cultural fundraisers, etc. or even just interact with very many people around here.

LOL, The Aladdin commercial? They are not even a local company, they are a company from Carlsbad, CA and have over 50 offices in Washington, Idaho, and California. Easy to find out that info with a web search. That commercial runs lots of other places. It has no more to do with this area than anywhere else it runs.

Unfortunately for short-term particulates that is true. For other measures like ozone/smog it is lower. But Fresno's air has improved. Your same web source also said "Fresno, California, for example, experienced a remarkable decline in the number of high ozone days since its peak in 2001-2003."

FYI, I am not a Fresno native. I lived other places before moving here, some better some worse. I've also been to 40 US states and there are many worse places to live in the US. I hope you avoid one of them.

Good luck wherever you end up.

Yankee is quite incorrect on many fronts. I hate Fresno, too, but give a town its due. A handful of Fresno schools produce quite respectable numbers and Clovis schools are among the best in the state. Air quality is bad... if Yankee moved here without knowing that it's on him. Nobody keeps that a secret. There are several nice pockets of great housing, not just northern 93711, so let's pull that back into perspective, too. And #1 crime? Not sure what that means but I'm fairly certain there are other cities with higher (per capita) numbers.

Hey, just listen to the news...if you can stomach it. Now, "they" are looking for 500 of the 1200 prisoners they let out a few months back, due to budget restraints. Seems a "software gliche" allowed these 500 "high risk" prisoners out by "mistake". Oh, and your cultural icons are unable to stay due to financial problems....the MET! This place has NOTHING TO OFFER, if you are not being paid to provide a lobbying RETORT to honest inputs, including STATEMASTER.COM who would gladly meet you in court with your "opinionated" data on #1 in Violent Crime (CA) and statewide education ratings. Cough Cough.....who needs this unhealthy place that is FULL TO THE BRIM with ego opinions and NO REAL FACTS, and typical side stepping to "other regions" and what they are doing....and other revealing unclassy defense mechanisms about "who one hangs out with".....glad I don't live next to you and your "upbringing" legacy. Have fun with your NEW AND ADJUSTED TAX BILL!

Based on your website and your interpretations, Camden NJ must be safe since the Garden State of New Jersey is only #16 for violent crime. It must not be too bad in Detroit since your site ranks Michigan as lower than California in crime.

LOL, Did you not pay attention and realize those are 500 state prisoners and are scattered over ALL of California. So your comment is about the entire state, not one area.

That is 500 people in a state population of 37 million people and spread over the 3rd largest state by geographical size.

Once again, something you saw on TV was not about just the Fresno area. But you still try to use half-truth opinions to make it sound that way.

FYI in the news also, the state of Illinois admitted they released 2,000 prisoners by mistake due to a software program error into a smaller state than California. I can't help but think you will try to spin it to mean crime is bad all the way out here.

The Census Bureau ranked California #14 for violent crime. Maybe your site needs to argue in court with the US Government about who is right.
State Rankings--Statistical Abstract of the United States--Violent Crime Rate

FYI, your website (per its footnote under the table) uses the 2005 state education ranking from Morgan Quitno Press which has since been purchased by CQ Press.

CQ Press did this crime ranking (another Morgan Quitno ranking before the purchase) that in 2009 had Fresno at #161 out of 393 cities for crime.
http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2009...9_Rank_Rev.pdf

If you believe the Morgan Quitno/CQ Press education rankings at your site then you also need to believe the city crime rankings I just linked.

It is from the same ranking source that your website trusts for education rankings. I guess that means it is not my opinion.

But if you are going to use statewide facts for some things then Fresno also gets credit for cultural things in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the rest of the state besides the local museums, local symphony, local opera, local dance troupes, etc.

Fair is fair if you use statewide data.

LOL this coming from someone who fills posts with broad generalities, inaccurate stereotypes, half-info, attacks, and opinions? You might want to reread some of your posts first before accusing others.

I hope you didn't do this kind of research about your next destination, you may be in for a big surprise when you get there.

Again good luck with your move.

People who are STUCK and have NO OPTIONS TO GET OUT, will defend ANYTHING and make up anything to support their narrow views and their "lobby job" mindsets.

Fresno is NOT A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE ON ALL FRONTS!

93711 is a big zip code, and has sketchier areas, although nothing like the "bad" areas of the city. I would avoid a lot of the apartment complexes or houses near them. We have lived in that zip code for the last seven years and have seen our neighborhood start to decline a bit, mainly due to foreclosures and also the increase in houses being rented out. Lots of loud music at night and lawns not being mowed, etc. There are still nice neighborhoods around, though.

I think people exaggerate a lot of the crime, although of course there is an increase in property crime right now. A lot of the cities in the Midwest/South have way worse crime than Fresno. Tulsa, the city where I used to live, has a much bigger crime problem.

Really the number one problem with Fresno is the job market, and if someone already has a job lined up that ceases to be a major issue. However, it isn't something to be taken lightly, the job market is truly bad here, and I think this area will probably be among the last to turn things around. I am a professional with an advanced degree and have been looking for almost a year. Although it's true the percentage increase in unemployment is less here than other areas of CA, that is because the job market was bad to begin with, as someone said once "You can't really fall very far if you're already lying on the floor."

On a positive note, my unemployment check goes a lot farther here! And I would still prefer Fresno to the Bay, things are much less hectic here.

Hhmmmmmm. I think that quote from you also says a lot about your most recent post.

I have plenty of other options of places to live. Maybe some day I might move, but maybe not. So far we have been happy and successful here.

And yes I also recognize that Fresno and the state of California may not be for everyone, but there are many worse places to live in the US also. There are pros and cons everywhere.

Oh and by the way all of your other posts SCREAM the name of another website.

Let me help you out, you are posting at http://WWW.CITY-DATA.COM . Lots of facts and data about cities and places in the US if you click this link. Since they run this forum they deserve a mention and being used for reference.

Again, good luck on the move. I think you might need some luck if you don't think there are worse places to end up.

I am trying to remember from your previous posts, was that a MSA? Let me know since it never hurts to network. That way if I hear of something I will try to pass it on.

MSA, also a CPA, but not a lot of experience, and none with the local client base. Probably my biggest hurdle.

Hiring may be slowly starting to pick up, but there apparently are a glut of unemployed accountants in the area right now, and I don't know if they will ever get to the levels of hiring they had prior to all this.
I think I generally get passed over for the person with 2-3 years working for firms in the area.
