There's so much to love about Northern California, right now I live in LA and miss being up there. San Francisco is great, but obviously, out of my price range... Please help me out..

Specifics:
-i will be pursuing a career as a painter (but not a lanscape painter). so a more 'artsy' city is preferred.

-i will be about 22 at the time of moving.

-love mountains, places to hike, all that good nature-y stuff around.

-having a trader joe's nearby is important

-looking for more affordable area

-not TOO isolated/small townish, like sebastopol would be too boring for me.

-being near a large body of water is a plus

any suggestions? thanks...

what is your rental budget?
that's kind of a key question.

With that rental budget you could find a decent place in Santa Cruz county (i highlighted county to suggest that you consider the entire county) ... it meets all of your criteria although it is expensive and yet you say you can afford $1400.00 a month.
When you say a "big body of water" ... i'm assuming that the Pacific will suffice?
And it's less than 2 hours to San Francisco.

You could buy a smaller used houseboat, moored on Lake Shasta, make payments.

I thought of doing that before. I saw a used one for Sale last year. She was a 25 footer fer $20k.

Or moored over on 'The Delta'.

That's a great suggestion. There are plenty of places to hike in the Santa Cruz mountains. You won't find skiing there, but you can get to Lake Tahoe in a few hours. You'll be close to the ocean, so you can take up surfing if you don't already do that.

Oh oh... A bit too expensive for me actually -- it costs more than Santa Monica (where I live now) -- neeeverminnddd.

Unless you're a very talented painter, as in highly paid, I wouldn't recommend Santa Cruz... though it's one of my favorite places. Maybe something more like Sacramento.
