Monterey is misspelled [not a good way to start a thread on the California forum].

Marin. Although the coastline is more beautiful in the other regions, Marin is close to Wine Country and SF so a little better for day to day living.

"Monterey" is, of course, the accepted spelling in California, but "Monterrey" would technically be the correct spelling in normal Castilian Spanish. It is this double-r spelling that is used for the Mexican state and the cheese. How the second "r" came to be dropped in the name of the Central Coast city is somewhat of a mystery. One of the main theories is that the source language for the name is, in fact, Galiciano, one of the minor languages of Iberia. So while "Monterrey" is not the accepted spelling in California, it is the proper spelling of the same name in the language from which a majority of California cities take their names. It's a bit like saying "Mision Vieja" -- it's technically correct, but not "the California way."

Actually, I'd guess it's the opposite. I don't know the origin of "Monterrey" (or "Monterey", for that matter), but "monte" means "mount" and "rey" means king. The added 'r' might just have been because someone trilled the word a tad to much.
