Interesting, how your subconscious mind crafted that phrase so appropriately.

Now, I am no partisan or ideologue, but it's obvious that progressive and liberal democratic agendas (in confluence with the tanking of the national economy, of course) have landed California in the mess they are in today. So yeah, I would think any reasonable California voter would have to pull the lever for an economic conservative in order to reign in the wild spending and handout programs, throw a monkey wrench in the status quo to shake things up a bit, and basically save the state and its people from total collapse and pandemonium in the streets. I dare say if you all do not get a conservative in there pronto that your state, and possibly many of your citizens, could very well end up dead-in-the-wool.

I may be joining your fair state again soon by way of relocation, and you better believe this independently-minded, heretofore dyed-in-the-wool apolitical non-voter will quickly become an ardent and staunchly conservative Republican voter for the next few election cycles at least.

I also really question Meg's motivation for becoming Governor. I don't find her very genuine. I don't actually feel that she cares, but is doing it for reasons that are self serving- like it's a hobby that she's suddenly gung-ho about and is impatient about having it all right now, purchased.

I also saw the recent video of her press meeting. When the press (which she invited) started asking questions, she flustered, looked to her "handlers" and then had the press removed! That was very telling indeed. Perhaps she didn't have her carefully written notes with her on how to answer a simple relevant question?

She's also been asked by a local radio station to come on to speak and she's refused and avoided on all but one occasion. She's certainly no dummy but her social anxiety and ineptitude don't match the position well. You gotta be a people person for this job.

On the flip side I know Jerry Brown is on the radio just about every week, prior to him ever discussing a run. It's not a requirement, but he makes an effort..seems present. At least the guy shows an interest in his job, California and the people. Is he the perfect candidate- I don't think so but he's honest enough to admit that he's made some mistakes prior, thinks and learns from them. I like the fact that he's not making a bunch of ridiculous promises and using the usual buzzwords to reel in the votes.

Alert the media! Someone is running for office for selfish reasons! This has never happened before!

The only problem is that "staunchly conservative Republican" doesn't get voted into office in statewide elections. Nor do "socialists" like Peter Camayo who also runs for governor every election or so it seems. Californians are middle to left & a governor has to deal with that kind of mindset. There has to be compromise but even the initiatives tend to be approved each year so the typical California voter is unrealistic when it comes to fiscal issues. This is a complicated state with no easy answers. I am very happy the bullet train proposition won but know there isn't enough money to pay for it. It gets frustrating for California voters. A good governor who has the ability to win over people should be able to help solve California problems. Arnold fits that profile well but even his own party criticize him all the time while the Democrats sit back and do nothing. I'm starting to get bummed

Clongirl that makes a lot of sense. I agree with you about Meg especially. While I don't think either of them will be that great at this time (Meg not at any time), if it comes down to Whitman or Brown, I'll be voting for Brown.

It is fairly evident that a direct democracy does not work, as many initiatives tie the hands of the legislature. The voters want these projects/programs but do not want to pay for them.

The CA ballot initiative process should be reformed to act as a check and balance on the legislature - not act as a legislature, which is what it appears to have become.
Oh, right You see I was against it before I was for it [or maybe it was that I was for it before I was against it I'm just being unrealistic because I love trains & mass transit.

It's funny how people focus so much on the governors seat when its the legislature that seems to cause most of the problems with their BS yet they keep getting reelected, gotta vote the party line I guess.
Thank you for saying this. I will be voting for Meg precisely because there is at least a shot she will act as a check on the unions. Funny thing to say from someone who works for the government, I know....but unions have a history of starting out good, but then making unrealistic demands as time goes on. This is exactly where we are in CA.

That said, I don't have a lot of hope here. The real problem is with the legislature. The Republicans are too far to the right. Dems too far to the left and neither group is willing to compromise on anything. Most people complain about the legislature, but they think their legislator is ok.

That said, I think Republicans get it more when it comes to financial issues....They understand you just can't have the governent continually overspend, continutally raise taxes, and continually add new regulations and expect to have prosperity.

This is hardly a legitimate criticism of any candidate. The "beauty contest" mentality is best left in high school.

Uhhh, no. Not even close. 60 million is a drop in the bucket. Billions are spent on our schools.
