No... I didn't get a fix-it ticket.

The last time, I had already sent in my renewal for the coming year... the officer checked my registration and verified I was paid in full for the next 14 months... and I had my current registration good for 2 months.

My tab disappeared about 3 months before expiration...

I own several cars... used to keep them all registered... no more. I now trailer my cars to car shows... they are now registered non-op... which is another thing... why do we have to pay not to use our cars

On the flipside, I live in New York, but just re-registered my car using my moms address in California. Registration and Insurance is still cheaper out there than here in NYC. Out of state license plates and registering in PA or southern states is far more egregious here than in California too.

We're not in the south but are just nine miles noth of a a southern state. When we moved from California last year we arrived here just before CA registration was due on our car. The tab was over $400. Here we received licence plates, tags, had a car inspection and got Missouri drivers licenses for each of us all for $97, and the tags were for two years. Yesterday we picked up personalized license plates. The fee was $15 for the plates and $18.50 for the tags good until July 2011.

In time we'll have to pay personal property tax on the car. We're just waiting for the bill. But considering the annual property tax on our home was only $746, I doubt that it will be very much.

As close as I could ever figure, the California Legislature never saw a penny of mine they didn't want and couldn't spend.

How does CA DMV know when a person moved to CA? (Out of in of the 20 day requirement to register and get a license?) If a person has lived in CA for several months and they [finally] go to a DMV, can't they just "say" they just got to CA three days ago (consistent with the date on their new smog certificate)?

A couple of ways... the easiest is getting a parking ticket or getting pulled over... then there is the 24 hour anonymous tip line...

I would imagine filing a CA tax return or paying in state tuition would be conclusive...

If you don't get a ticket, the DMV is going to research your state tuition or tax returns? Hard to believe.

In the scenario I described: Someone has been living out of state and moves to CA, say in February. They blow off going to the DMV because they still have registered plates from their previous state and they still have a valid driver's license from their previous state. Six months after they move to CA, they go to a smog station and get a smog cert from a successful smog test. Two days later they walk into the DMV with their smog cert (which was sent to the DMV electronically anyway), their title, their registration from the previous state, and proof of insurance.

They lie to the DMV and say they just moved to CA a week ago. How is the DMV going to know they have been living in CA for six months?

We are only talking about reregistering a vehicle within 20 days. But the person also has to change their drivers license to California. There is a 10 day residency requirement to change a drivers license to California ( I love differences like that in regulations ).

Now how will they know you've been here longer? Maybe if someone says something like "I just moved to Cali" vs. "I just moved to California".

But seriously my guess is that the tip line is probably the biggest way they find out, especially from people mad that they just wrote their own check to DMV for California registration. Another reason why you should be nice to your neighbors.
