I agree West Antelope Valley, that is West of the Antelope Valley Fwy (CA 14) is the way to go if you need to be in Lancaster. Rosamond is good as well. Problem with Rosamond, Tehachapi, and California City is if you need to do major shopping and movies you need to go to Palmdale and Lancaster (In the case of Tehachapi and California City its Bakerfield for these activities.)

Rosamond, Tehachapi, and California City area are Very Safe compared to Lancaster and Palmdale and that's the trade off.

I hope that this info helps.

P.S. Santa Clarita is also that's an option, but a little more expensive and a tough freeway drive (CA 14); Anterlope Valley Freeway is nerve racking but can be worth it.
P.P. S also Merolink serves Santa Clarita, Palmdale and Lancaster. Metrolink has station in the three cities listed. Here the link: Metrolink :: Welcome

I think they still have to go to Mojave---this was the store closest to us (North Edwards) and I am quite familiar with it, of old! Cal City was rumoured to be getting an Albertsons years ago, but it never happened.

Have lived in this Valley for 43 years...my daughters were educated here, and they each have two kids who were also educated her...one is a Lawyer in Beverly Hills and one is 2nd year at Yale Law School, one is getting her teaching credential and the youngest is in a medical school. Our beautiful home overlooks the entire valley and is in the hills of west Palmdale...great place to live, and the education can't be too bad...

Wink Just left Lancaster, CA

Just moved from California about 8 months ago. I have owned 2 homes in Lancaster for about the past 9 years. The first location was nice, but I decided to move into a larger new home basically from 35th st East to 27th st East, BIG MISTAKE!! The first few weeks we were in the house, someone, a bad ass kid perhaps, threw a rock and broke one of our front windows out-I should have left then. The neighborhood has consistently gotten worse since we moved there in 2003. We are renting the house out now and the area is just terrible-still slashing tires on cars, loud music, u name it. So glad we left. To me the whole Antelope Valley has lost its lustre. I'm a working class citizen and I couldnt take it anymore. Let's just say that we don't miss it one bit!

I'm confused... is it gangs or drugs that are the problem there? Or perhaps both?

Both. Gangs are a serious issue now because of the population shift from LA. Drugs have a been a long time problem in the AV. A lot of open space in which to make meth labs.

This is true. Meth especially is a HUGE problem in all of the desert communities. I know, I grew up in the AV. According to my own visits, and family and friends that still live there, it's only getting worse.

And to Gramma Arlene...well, you live how about 1% of people in the AV are lucky enough to live. A home in the hills west of Palmdale? Yes, I'm sure it's beautiful. But try living on Lancaster or Palmdale's east side...totally different story.

Even though West Lancaster and West Palmdale are 45 minutes are so from the base - if you have a teenage son - there are more kids, movie theaters - malls - teenage type activities for him to do in this area.
