I too have been offered a position at Edwards AFB. We've lived in El Paso, TX (ft bliss) the last 5 yrs....the desert is NOT my favorite place....being from the GREAT NORTHWEST.

Would we be better looking to buy in Tehachapi as many of the post suggest or looking into Lancaster?

Houses appear to be about the same in price but I am more concerned with the academics of the local gramer schools.

Thanks
You will fined that Tehachapi is a much better place than Palmdale/Lancaster.. And Tehachapi is in Kern county not Los Angeles county like Palmdale Lancaster is. I BIG PLUS And much lower crime.

Default California City, CA

Thinking of retiring and starting a business in California City, CA. What kind of business would be a success? Would the community and surrounding areas support it?

Before I moved to West Lancaster, I wanted to move to a place where I could bring up my two kids in saftey and where I could sleep without sirens or helicopters flying overhead....away from Los Angeles city. For four different weekends I lodged in Lancaster and drove around the lenght and breath of Lancaster mostly in the evenings.Needless to say, the worst always come out in the evenings/nights and moreso during weekends. I saw a sleeping city that is peaceful and serene night and day.At the end of the investigations, I walked into a Development company and started dicussions on buying a house...because I loved the serenity, qiuetness and the green transformation of the city sitting at the base of the mountain. The only sound of planes I have heard are those heading north to the Air Force base, and the recent Fire fighting planes. Why, I do not understand is the reason for the negative postings. Or am I living in another Lancaster....but there is only one in Antelope Valley, Los Angeles. Let the truth be told, statistics are fine but nothing beats reality, and the stats might be ten blind men grabbing at the tusk of an elephant and concluding an elephant to be the tusk. And too, l learnt the Mayor of the city is an african-american...could that be part of the stats? But for me the reality is the truth and I thought I should put in my quota and encourage anyone who is living in Lancaster now and here to come on board.

Well put, I agree with you. I have friends that live in Palmdale and they love it.

Default Moving to Lancaser

I've worked in Lancaster and Palmdale since 2000. The west side of both communities are the best parts of town. However, you could move
into a brand new house and have a Section 8 ghetto type living next to
you. Try communicating with these people when you ask them to turn
down their hip hop music at midnight. You can easily spot a Section 8
house in these clean, new neighborhoods. The grass is dead, old
furniture is strewn in the front yard, and since the occupants don't work,
they're always hanging out in the front yard, drinking malt liquor , with
their gangsta pals.

These ghetto refugees from Los Angeles have ruined the Antelope Valley. They rat pack goods kids, stealing bikes, backpacks, and cellphones. You've got to be vigilant when you go shopping, especially if you go to the Antelope Valley Mall.

You can gauge the criminal activity in Lancaster and Palmdale by
the long lines at the new courthouse in Lancaster. The courthouse
already needs more courtrooms to hear the cases opened by the
influx of criminals from Los Angeles.

You can find pockets in neighborhoods where decent people live.
There are plenty of stores and restaurants in both communities.
It is possible to avoid being a crime victim. Just do your homework
before you put your money down.

Unhappy HELP....lol

The question I have is this... I have a step son with dyslexia which has hindered his learning abilities. He is a great kid but struggles in school. His current school has worked with him to this point and it took forever to get him diagnosed with dyslexia. My wife and I will be living on base and using the base school system. Does anyone know what the schools reputation is for Special Ed? I saw one (1) response on greatschools.net that said it sucked for it, but that was out of three (3) total reviews...I just want a better sampling of parental reviews to look at than one person saying it sucked....any help out there?

And to Gramma Arlene...well, you live how about 1% of people in the AV are lucky enough to live. A home in the hills west of Palmdale? Yes, I'm sure it's beautiful. But try living on Lancaster or Palmdale's east side...totally different story.
I lived in a mobilehole at 37th E & Ave I for about 15 years! We built and ran the golf course at F-8 and 60th East. Sold it in 1981. I know the area very well, but I wanted to point out that the schools, like everywhere else, have plenty of creeps, but the education is available to those who are motivated. Since I sent the first post, my grandkids are thriving....Kev is a Beverly Hills lawyer, Kate just graduated from Yale law and is studying for the bar, Amy is teaching and Jill is in the final year at med school. I repeat...schools are what you take from them!

Is there really no hope for this area??

We were considering palmdale by the lake/mountain area.

Although that would be our location, i was thinking of driving my kids to one of the more decent schools here in santa clarita?

There is a reason that there is a megawatt windmill by the so-called lake. I would recommend a cardboard shack in Santa Clarita over a 6000 sq. ft. mansion with butler in the Antelope Valley.
