The post-Arnold era begins in 2010, and competition for the coveted gubernatorial post in California is already heating up. The Republicans have some excellent candidates who all stand a fair chance at winning the election.

A recent survey indicates that over 32% of the probable Republican primary voters favor Meg Whitman for the governor’s post. Let us review some of the leading Republican names vying for the California Governorship in 2010: Read More

She's apparently a Mike Duvall Republican so should have an excellent chance.

That 32% is from a poll almost two months old and included Tom Campbell, who is seeking Boxer's Senate seat instead of the Governor's office. The latest Field Poll has Whitman up 45%-17% over Steve Poizner.

Whitman v. Brown seems to be the likely November matchup.

And if California elects Jerry Brown, who sold the state to the public employee unions in the 11th hour on his way out of office, it deserves what it gets!

I think Meg Whitman will win. I liked some of her key points. Unfortunately she will be a politician and will most likely never live up to what she says during her run for office. Only time will tell.

It's way too early to tell who will win with any degree of accuracy.

On one hand, Brown has a consistent, though not overwhelming, lead in head-to-head polls over the past two months. On the other hand, this year should trend to Republicans on a national level.

On one hand, California has trended blue over the past couple of decades. On the other hand, Whitman is the socially moderate sort of Republican who can probably compete statewide, at least on the issues.

On one hand, Jerry Brown is such a well known name that he probably doesn't have as much room to grow in popularity, whereas Whitman is less well known and has a lot of latitude to further expand her support. On the other hand, we know Brown knows how to run a campaign while Whitman is untried and a mystery in that regard.

Beyond that, the election is nine months away and even the primaries are four months away. Nothing really points strongly either to the left or the right at the moment.

Will Mike Duvall be involved in her campaign? She did kick it off in his (former) district.

I hope you're right. But I doubt it. The biggest problem is actually with Democrats in the legistlature. Followed by Republicans in the legislature. Too many gerrymandered districts with safe seats. And too many voters who are way too tolerant of the corruption and complacency in state government.
