Hi, I am relocating west due to desire to have a winter optional life and the fact that the recession crashed my alternative health care practice (chiropractic & homeopathy).
I'm considering north of San Fran up to Mendocino and east to Tahoe area.
Any suggestions on green, progressive communities that have a need for a skilled practitioner? I would love to hear what places you who live in Cali would recommend or not and why (including places beyond what I mentioned) Thanks so much for your input!

Santa Cruz county is green, open and progressive.
It's good you're not an acupuncturist 'cause there is a plethora of them in the county ... due, in part, to the presence of Five Branches (Five Branches University) and the close proximity to San Francisco.
I don't know about the "need for" (that's a business questions i guess) but it's an area you may want to check out ... Monterey County is another option.
Because there are so many acupuncturists in Santa Cruz, my acupuncturist moved the practice to Los Gatos which is just on the other side of the Santa Cruz mountains.
That (Los Gatos) is an option for you as well ... people who are open to alternative modalities and with lots of $$$ to pay for it.
Unless you want to live in Sacramento or any other community in the central valley (which i do not recommend - for one, the air quality is horrendous especially in the summer) i'd stay close to the coast and for sufficient business you may want to stay closer to San Francisco (like in Marin county) or south a bit in either Santa Cruz county or Monterey county (which is just south of Santa Cruz county).
If you want to live in the Truckee / Tahoe area you need to be prepared for real winters .... big snow!
I don't know what you mean by having a "winter optional life".
New Moon Natural Foods may be a place to "touch base" with ... someone(s) to talk to about the alternative scene up there.
They've expanded their store and have various workshops and gatherings and it's a good place to make contact with other alternative people and their web-site has contact information for just a few practitioners in the area.

I'll second coyoteskye's recommendations on Santa Cruz and Monterey. Both places are into these types treatments. Both have groups of ppl/potential clients with decent incomes, maybe more so in Pebble Beach, Monterey, Carmel.

Another suggestion would be Sonoma County. I have family who live there and really like it.

But ultimately you'll need to do demographic studies considering household incomes, unemployment, foreclosures, number of practioners in the areas, etc... to find the best places to carve out your niche.

As you go north of Santa Rosa you get a whole different demographic. Poverty, unemployment, etc... are higher although there are pockets with nice places. The main industry in Humboldt and Mendicino Counties is marijuana. Its well known as the Emerald Triangle for a reason. Whether or not thats a good place to start a new business will be up to you to research and consider.
