I am looking to move to far northern CA. I currently live in the bay area. I work from home so I will keep the same job after moving and therefore have no worries about finding a new one in the area.

I would like to avoid the terrible heat of the Sacramento/Chico areas and do definitely want to stay in CA, but other than that I am really not tied to any particular area. I would like it to be relatively rural though, I'm hoping to get 3 acres or so.

My question is, where are the safest areas of the far northern part of the state? I was truly shocked to read that crime is very bad up there. I live in a city and would have never expected to find that many small towns in beautiful Humboldt and Mendocino counties are far above the crime rate of my CITY. Definitely looking for LESS crime, not more! Don't want to end up living next to drug dealers and thieves! lol

Any help greatly appreciated!

My friend's aunt retired up to Elk in Mendocino. It's very scenic & tranquil & home to lots of B&B's.
