Best Buys, perhaps?

I don't see this new Gottschalk working out. This area has just been too hard hit, and I saw a recent article state that they anticipate a full recovery of the job market still 2-3 years away. I think it will be a while before a lot of people can afford to shop at that kind of store. I don't think customer service will be enough, personally I'd rather save a few dollars.

I could be wrong, though.

So I am somewhat confused. Is this the same company that ran Gottschalks? If so, will they reopen their Northwest stores? There were a number in the Seattle area at one time as well, I believe buying out Lamonts.

I think it is not the same company. It is a descendant of the founder but he wasn't involved in the bankruptcy.

Wouldn't it have been easier to quit gouging people for department store items and stay in business to begin with? I don't get the appeal of this store... never did. Is there some sort of 'status' that comes from shopping at a store that over charges for everything? I'd say it's a bit too early in the 'recovery' to start thinking of a comeback.

It seemed like they were more popular with older folks who grew up with that type of store.

I remember Gottschalk's as a classy department store. When I was a kid my mother made special trips to Fresno just to buy clothes and hats there. She didn't believe in shopping at "3rd rate" quality stores, and I don't think that was uncommon in her generation. Me, I avoid Macy's like the plague because, aside from their prices, I just don't like their stores, Period. But I'm fine with Penney's, Sear's, sometime Target, and smaller stores. Never seem to find what I want at Kohl's when I'm after something specific. Ross, to me, is a Hell-hole.

But you never know. Nordstrom, despite being a Bay Area-owned chain, makes the highest profits in the Pacific NW, and I know women who buy there almost exclusively. And although Seattle has often enjoyed a good economy, Portland never has. So for whatever appeal Nordstrom holds over patrons here, people still somehow dish out $ for their over-priced merchandise.

I really liked Gottchalk's in San Luis Obispo..(I guess it was SLO....in that shopping center near the Madonna Inn)....and so did my daughter and her best friend, who were teens at the time.... Believe it or not, they sometimes had new styles (and designer names) before they hit S. California, where we live....... They were a perfect sized store, imho......not too big or small......and the quality was pretty good..... I was sad when they closed because we used to go there every time we went to visit my in-laws.....we would always stay at the Embassy Suites right by the store.

Just an update. Local media reports say that Gottschalk now plans to open 3 stores on November 1.

The first stores scheduled to open are in Clovis, Auburn, and in Carson City Nevada.
