We are a family with a 4 year old boy and are planning to move to the bay area - we need advice about which suburbs to consider - we want to be in an area that has a lot of young families, good schools, nearby shopping and amenities and that is not too too far from a BART station and has easy access to major highways. Also, we want to know what other's experience in the bay area is with respect to kid friendly activites and schools. One area that looks appealing is San Ramon - is it a good place given the criteria listed above? Which other cities do you suggest we look at?

My BIL family is from San Ramon and thought it was a wonderful place to raise kids

I'm assuming you already are comfortable with the cost of living there?

If money is not an issue for you then I'd recommend moving to the north bay area, the city of Petaluma or the surrounding Sonoma county cities are all nice and super expensive. The south bay area is just way too congested. good luck.

I would recommend san ramon or pleasanton. Livermore has no bart but is also nice. Danville is great if you can afford it. Sunol is nice and private but also pricey. Fremont has great areas but is very asian.

Assuming you're open to non-bay areas - you might want to consider Redding, CA - here are some websites to surf:
Redding, CA. Welcome to VisitRedding.com
Chris & Maria Jeantet : Redding Real Estate - Real Estate in Redding CA - Shasta County Real Estate - Redding California Homes- Homes for Sale in Redding (our business website)

We moved here from San Diego because we wanted to raise a family, buy a nice home in the country with room to roam, and be close to the lakes and rivers. Best decision ever made.

Hope it all works out for you.

The thing is not to go outside of the expensive areas also check on weather.com and look up averages of precipitation for the area your
looking into it can change pretty fast 20 miles or so can amount to a lot more rain in the winter.

I would try factor that in to and do not take a Realtors word for it
