First, check your map. Coalinga isn't anywhere near San Jose.
Coalinga got it's name because it was Coaling station "A" for the railroad. The Hispanic population transformed Coaling "A" into Coalinga.

Coalinga is off of a isolated stretch of 5 between SF and LA. Its closest (60 miles) to Fresno. Harris Ranch is out there. Good steaks, and lots of cattle.

Oh, and there was an earthquake centered in Coalinga in the early 80's the wiped out the older brick downtown

I was a firefighter in Coalinga during the late '70's. It wasn't much then, but I understand that there's a new prison there. The Harris ranch feedlot is out on I-5 a few miles north of the restaurant. What a smell!
Have fun and good luck.

I'll move this to general CA, since it doesn't fit in the other locations!

New housing tract
I see signs in San Luis Obispo County advertising a beautiful, new housing tract. The only other thing I've heard about Coalinga is that it is on an earthquake fault.

Coalinga is not on an earthquake fault, but the Parkfield area up the hill from Coalinga is on the San Andreas fault. Parkfield is the most active area of that fault and USGS has got that place wired like no other part of the world. I'm exaggerating, but they have a seismometer every 50 feet!
