Hi all,

I'm about to register my vehicle in California after becoming a new resident.

Here's the story: I bought my car when I was on active duty in the United States Navy when I was stationed in Tennessee. Since I was active duty, I paid no sales tax on the vehicle.

I talked to a DMV associate that told me that since I didn't pay any tax on the car when I bought it, that California would make me pay the sales tax on that vehicle upon the payoff of the loan, which happens early next year. Basically I will owe CA a payoff before I get my certificate of title.

This seems totally illegal to me.

Can someone please advise me on this situation

Can you point me in the direction of the legality? Where's the law that states that CA can extort veterans? I need some specifics.

You'd be better off talking to an attorney if you really want to enter into a legal dispute with the DMV.

Stop and consider for a moment, the person you talked to might not have had the facts, you bought the machine in Tennessee, which apparently gave you an exemption. You should have proof of that exemption, and California should honor the exemption.

Since your vehicle and finance was done in Tennessee (I presume) California should not require what you state.

I would also talk to Tennessee DMV and your lender.

Everyone gets extorted, no exceptions.

Yes, California is an equal opportunity extorter. Only politicians get a break here.

Is it better to buy a car in California upon moving there, or buy a car where taxes are less expensive and prices less (looking at subcompacts with the best MPG city)?

I am wanting to downsize before moving but wonder if I am making the wrong decision to buy before moving?

Legal or not the dmv will do their best to get money from you. Contact the dmv & talk to a supervisor.
