They are test-in public schools. They take the best and the brightest. Every district should have schools(or at least programs if they're not big enough) to do this, since it's really bad for the country to hold back the brightest in favor of the slowest

Anybody know offhand which of the Bay Area schools in this list have selective admission? I believe Lowell in SF does (test + lottery if I'm not mistaken), but I'm not sure about the others.

Lowell is the only one from the Bay Area that has a special admissions process based on academic merit.

Oakland Charter and American Indian are inner city schools that accept students from all sorts of backgrounds-usually they enter the 2 schools with sub-par grades.

Pacific Collegiate in Santa Cruz has a lottery that is open to all students in Santa Cruz County and also appears to NOT be based on academic merit but rather just residency in the county. At least based on the website there is no mention of exams being required.

The rest are all 'regular' high schools that are open to the students who live in that particular area.

And skimming through the list of Bay Area middle schools, none of them have a special admissions process centered around academic merit.
