I am probably going to be moving to the Fresno Ca. area to work at the new prison in Mendota Ca. any tips or suggestions on where to live?

A little more info will help. Are you coming as a single person or a family with children? Do you have a preference about renting or buying? Any lifestyle preferences (activities, proximity to shopping, etc)?

I would probably suggest just looking in the Fresno/Clovis area instead of elsewhere. Depending upon where in the urban area you pick you would be looking at about a 45 to 60 minute commute to the new federal prison site.

Without more details about your preferences, I might suggest first looking in the areas north of Clinton Avenue and West of 99. That might reduce your commute by about 10 minutes.

But other than that time savings almost any of the newer Fresno areas would work.

There have been a couple of recent threads with ideas so check those then post again if you want more specifics for your situation.

Depending upon the type of housing and type of town acceptable to you, you might find some good newer single family homes in Los Banos (about the same commute time as Fresno) or Kerman. But those are both smaller farm towns although Los Banos does have a significant number of commuters to San Jose. Personally I'm not fond of either of those cities, even though I know people who live in both.

There are also some areas with rural homes on a couple of acres but you'd want to research those better, not all would be desirable.

You might also look at Madera, or Kerman. I don't know why, but those two towns always seemed nicer than Fresno to me.

DMensha, I don't know why either. I couldn't do either. If commuting to Mendota everyday was my deal, I'd probably look West of Hwy. 99 and north of Herndon. Tons of housing out there.

Oops, sorry, I meant EAST of Hwy 99... maybe near Riverside golf course.

I think it's funny that Yankee hates the area so much, claims to have moved from it, yet hunts down every Fresno post spewing venom and distorted facts from websites nobody has ever heard of.

Tell us, Yankee, were you fired from a job? Lose a home? Neighbor you didn't like? Why is it you have so much time to provide useless posts to future residents in a city you hate so much?
