I couldn't stand all those gross disposable things in the trash. Okay, I know it costs a lot to wash all those diapers but still....they really were reusable.

Good idea. Charging people might make those who otherwise wouldn't think about recycling switch. The canvas bags are much more durable anyway, and hold more groceries than plastic bags do.

What's even dumber is that it was the same enviro-nannys that told us we were killing the planet in the 80's by using paper bags and that we must all switch to plastic.
Not dumb, a sign of progress, humans often follow dead end trails, then they back track and find one that gets it right. No Big Deal.

Plastic bags and plastic trash is with us pretty much for ever.

For example, it costs $4,000 to process and recycle 1 ton of plastic bags, which can then be sold on the commodities market for $32 (Jared Blumenfeld, director of San Francisco's Department of the Environment as reported by Christian Science Monitor).

Yes. I gues the solution is not to use them at all.

More control by the Bolsheviks running things and their eco freak stooges. Up until now, did two things with plastic bags; saved and recycled them by returning them to the stores, and used them for cleaning my cats litter box. Not now, will now save and hoard them for the cat, and perhaps stick a few in my back pocket when I shop and insist on using them. Along the same topic, refuse to use the new supposedly long life super duper light bulbs. Have stocked up on the good old fashioned style, and when they are finally banned, will buy several hundred of them, enough to last for many years.

Good for California. Damn things break all the time anyway. Plastic water bottles should be banned as well.

Not that long ago in NYC a blind test was done on bottled water. Some of the most popular bottled waters were involved as well as NYC tap water.

And which water did most choose? Yep, the tap water. Most of your bottled water is nothing but filtered tap water so go buy yourself a PUR (or some other) water filter and save yourself some money and the environment your litter.
+1 although trust me anyone would know the horrible tap water in San Diego if they tasted it. We have a brita filter on our faucet.

I would miss them as we use them for trash as well, and yes, the extras are re-cycled but it is becoming harder and harder to find places that will re-cycle them. I our local recycling center will not, Wal Mart will take them.

As for charging us here we get 5 cents off for every canvas or paper bag we use. I know it isn't much but certainly is something.

Did ya read what I posted, it costs $4,000 bucks to recycle a ton of plastic bags which then have a value of $32 a ton.

Free enterprise systems says recycling plastic bags is a bad idea.

Clarks I just ignore those types these days. You can't take anyone seriously who can't see why protecting the environment is at least kind of important.
