Usually we go online and look at what is out there. On our adventures we are into mountains lakes and the such. Many times it is US Forest Service or whatever state park etc.
As a preferency we enjoy the sites that are more remote or not as improved.
For me, good is remote, few people and a beautiful setting.
I use yelp and rvparkreviews.com to check out reviews. If they look nice then I just try to find as much info on a campground as possible and just go for it. After all, a mediocre camping trip is still better than sitting at home. It is what you make of it.
^^This.
I don't think I've seen what I call a good campground anywhere in over 30 years:
1) decent amount of space between sites with trees and such for privacy
2) NO electricity connections at tent sites
3) Water close by; trash a reasonable distance away (NOT at each site).
4) RV and camper trash parked on the OTHER side of the world where their
generators and TV's and other noise/lights and all that aren't heard or seen.
